Hello Orienteers!

As a project towards my diploma in college I am conducting an online survey to determine "What makes an orienteer?".

You can take the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/orienteersurvey

The purpose is to generate more knowledge about people whom orienteer, with the intention of using this information to provide more targeted and suitable methods for successfully introducing beginners to the sport.

This should take no more than 10 minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous. The matter of successfully introducing people to orienteering is of importance to many Orienteers and we hope these results can help to resolve some of the difficulties faced.

Your participation is greatly appreciated,

Rosalind

PS: I had inspiration for the colour scheme from an awesome website...

I hope your survey results in useful information to help attract new orienteers.

I struggled a bit with the question about "level of orienteering" but eliminated "elite" and "international" to choose "club level" though we only complete for our clubs (in the US) at relays. I've orienteered internationally, but not at a high level.

Ditto, JanetT. I left a comment to that effect. Also that I hope the results will be made available to the orienteering community. Hopefully lots of orienteers will respond!

Rosalind - If it would be useful for you to see the results of past surveys of this type over the past 40+ years, contact me and we'll work out how to scan the back issues of Orienteering North America.

On the "level of orienteering" question I selected other and entered "national sanctioned events" which is what I feel is missing in between club level and elite.

Perhaps you can re-structure the survey and ask prior surveyed folks to re-take it? Not sure how valid this question's answers are if you're missing info valid in the US where a lot of Attackpoint's members live and play.

I started orienteering late but enjoy national competition.

Completed. I wonder about how external website links get treated on AP, when I finished I didn't immediately see a way to get back to AP, and the back button looked like it was going to take me back through all of the survey screens. Did I miss something?

It's better to code URLs to go to a new tab or window by including

target="_blank"

within the <a href > tag. A bit more typing, I know, but a better experience.

Links from the events page are probably automatically directed to a new window (by Ken's website), but user-added links aren't unless coded as I mentioned above.

Really, Janet? I much prefer two-finger tap and open new tab when I want one, to have to deal with new windows/tabs popping up automatically.

@gruver -- Bookmarks. Or "most visited" :)

Thanks for everyone that has already responded and for all the feedback you have provided.
I agree some of the questions definitely need editing - however I've already gathered some interesting results. It's difficult to determine categories that are suitable across nations, which is why the "other" option has proved very useful in cases.

So I've currently closed the survey for adjustments.

All comments provided will be taken into consideration for the improved version!
