i hear/see a ton of people on attack point always talking about orienteering and running and the like. but im also a cross country skiier and i was wondering how many other people on here cross country ski themselves either to work out or just for leisure. i just want to see how the sport is viewed by other people.

I love 4 seasons;-) WNY had a nice XC-ski season from the middle of January through March and much of April. Our club scheduled and ran 3 Ski-Os .

I find XC-ski activities to be gentler on my knees and as well as a great deal of fun.

yea they are super good on the knees. its a great alternative to the pounding of running.

Well, I've been xc skiing pretty much since I started walking, and racing since Jr High.
While I might dread going out for a run under some circumstances, I'm always ready to go skiing...

There's some pretty significant pockets of XC skiers (and ski-orienteers) in the US in New England, New York, Colorado, and California.

We're always looking for enthusiastic juniors to get into ski-o - any interest in competing in the Junior World Ski-O champs? If your abilities (skiing and orienteering) come close to matching your enthiusiasm, I'd suggest giving it a shot.

Take a look at the sub-heading of this site, "performance and training tools for orienteering athletes". That's why so many people talk about orienteering, though it's a great way to log training in other sports too. Kenny, the Web site designer, is first an orienteer and second a computer science guru from MIT.

I don't cross country ski much but the combo of XC ski and orienteering is a unique sport. You'd probably do great at it if you give it a try (try orienteering first with MNOC).

yah i have been skiing since i was only 18 months old...and it has basically become my life. Almost everything i do revolves around skiing, whether its training for track or even classes...everything has to do with skiing. Once you start, like people say, its a lifetime sport.

Here's the magic question though that no one's been able to answer for me. Why is it that few cross-country skiers use Orienteering as cross-training in North America while it's common in Scandinavia? I know that Lappe in Thunder Bay does, but that's because one of their coaches is a former Canadian National team member (70s). Free beer if you can name him without looking it up (folks from Lappe are excluded (sorry Timo); JMM, I'm sure I already owe you a beer).

If Canadian Orienteering could tap into the Jackrabbit pool, that would do great things for our junior development and a few people are doing this now (Brent in the Yukon, Brian May in BC) However, I think it will be a case of bringing the Orienteering to the ski clubs; waiting for them to come to events isn't working as far as I've seen.
The Nakkertok ski klub head coach just ran a B Meet here in Ottawa on the weekend. He's responsible for a few hundred young skiers.

Nevin, It seems that some of the older nakkertok kids have been out to the meets lately. Hopefully Mike has been encouraging them to use orienteering as training.

As for cross-country skiing. I ski a lot, and race for my university team but I have to say I like orienteering a lot more.

I skied every winter day when I lived in Wisconsin, and the Da-Yooper, but now only occasionally when there is enough snow now that I live in Ohio, I would love to try Ski -O but have yet to find an event in the mid west.

O Steve!:
Minneapolis skier here...I xc ski race in the winters....I live next to the loppet trail across from Wirth Park...we have plenty of orienteering right here in the Twin cities...come out to a MNOC meet and try orienteering....MNOC.org.....you might know a top high school xcskier named Leif who also orienteers very well....there is a meet here at Wirth Park on May 19th....and one at Afton on May 12th....

one of their coaches is a former Canadian National team member (70s)

My guess was Pauli Kaki - because of his Nordic/Finnish origin and knowing that he was one of the top Canadian orienteers in the 70s (I competed against him in the 1975 COC's in Dundas Valley). He also took part in the 1974 WOC's in Denmark.

After checking out the Lappe website I could easily verify that my guess was correct :)

Beer to be delivered to Bubo at Jukola by one of my contacts in Scandi.
Robbie, it's great that some of the Nakkertok kids have been out (are you old enough to be refered to them as "kids")? A few of them raced the Adventure Run which was great to see. It destroyed them, that's the point of the race.
But, do you think they could be convinced to make the jump to running in the May A meet?
Also, has the Junior program thought about doing anything specifically for Nakkertok?
