What clubs are sending teams to the relay champs, and in what classes?

CAOC, with teams in all classes. What about you, Ian?

iansmith:
Club - Points - People
CAOC 23 13
COK 3 1
CSU 1 1
DVOA 13 8
MNOC 7 4
NEOC 0 1
NEOOC 8 3
OLOU 19 8
PTOC 14 4
QOC 5 3
RMOC 3 1
SMOC 10 3

It looks like CAOC has 23 points and 13 people registered - not yet enough for the trifecta, but nearly so. DVOA looks likely to contend both the 4- and 8- pt categories. Since the inception of multiple categories, one club has won two categories six times - twice by RMOC, thrice by DVOA, and once by the reigning champs CSU. No club to date has won all three categories simultaneously. There appear to be a few guns for hire with CSU, NEOC, and RMOC. Please note that I only counted people registered for the "Championship Relay."

Probable teams:
4 pt: CAOC, DVOA, MNOC
8 pt: CAOC, DVOA, NEOOC (+1), OLOU x2, SMOC
12 pt: CAOC (+1), PTOC

It looks like some club (hi Mike) should field a 4-point team (even if its members add up to 8+) just so that the bronze medals find a home.

With the impending change in the relay format in 2014 to 3 runners/team, I find myself wondering: which of the 1991-2013 teams was the greatest of all time (GOAT)? If you could summon all the teams over those 23 years and race them, who would win?

I have only been to three relay champs, so my knowledge is limited, but I would make a case for both the 2002 CSU 4-pt team and elements of the 2006-2009 DVOA 4-pt teams.

BP:
Unless I am missing someones points, I think MNOC only has a 4 pointer team.
Dec 4, 2013 7:56 PM #
mikeminium:
BP, looks like you are right. There are 5 MNOC members registered for the relay, with a total value of 8 points. But no combination of 4 people can exceed 7 points.

Given the entries so far, CSU should be able to put together a team, given their - uh - flexibility - on membership. At the very least, I imagine Ian could find his way back to CSU - esp. given the lack of other NEOC entries - and then you just need two more bodies & points. Brenden was a Yes on AP until recently, so may be persuadable, and even with Ali running for her new local club, I imagine you could either pull Alex off her skis, or the well traveled Ms. Armstrong to the event. I do like a battle, esp. a rematch ;)

RMOC's 1997 team was the all-time dominant crusher.
Dec 5, 2013 4:10 AM #
JanetT:
Your primary club needs to match what OUSA membership has in the database. If for instance Ian declared NEOC his primary club when he renewed his membership and wants to represent CSU on a valid relay team (assuming he's a member of both clubs), he needs to tell OUSA Membership of the change (rshannonhouse at Comcast dot net) prior to the event.

I thought there used to be a rule about not changing primary club more often than every 6 months, but can't find that in the OUSA rules, so it may have been dropped.

My vote would be for the 2nd place finishers (Falcons) in the 1996 relays at Harriman. The team consisted of some people you may have heard of before: Wil Smith, Mike Smith, Sandy Hott, and Doug Mahoney. Probably two dozen WOCs total in that group (or more) including a top 10 by Sandy.

I'm pretty certain they would win a re-match today against the team that beat them that summer: Nina Wallace, Mark Innes, Dave Donaldson and myself. :-)

I'm assuming you have to take the team members in the state/age/condition they were in at the time.

It was fairly close in the 4-pt competition, where CAOC took an early lead but DVOA muscled ahead on the second leg (I think; see note) and never relinquished the advantage. The best CSU could do was move up from 4th (behind also MNOC) to third. The three top teams' fourth-leg runners ran almost exactly the same time and never saw each other in the woods, turning Leg 4 into more or less a formality.

It wasn't close at all in the 8-pt, where two of other teams' mispunches left the door wide open for OCIN, with a medal-competitive team in the 8-pt. (or 4-pt). category for the first time in two decades. (OCIN did medal in the 12 points last year.) Unfortunately it will be much more difficult to repeat for OCIN next year regardless of whether there is a format change, with two of the juniors on this year's team each losing a point. NE Ohio OC ran an even race for second, and SMOC came from 6th place into medals on the last leg thanks to Ali Crocker.

(Note: sadly we had a major problem with the onsite network. The results display computer and the announcer's computer couldn't talk to the main download one. So, announcing was spotty if at all present. We'll try to do better next time.)
