This subject was brought up under another thread. Since there has been criticism about the site selection of this event I think it is important that a full accounting of the decision making process be made.

In early 2007 BAOC was by contacted Vladimir Gusiatnikov and he suggested we submit a bid for the 2009 Trials. Several of us were quite excited about this prospect since we had yet to host the Team Trails.

Vladimir e-mailed us a proposal to have the Trials at East and South Bay Locations. Using our existing Almaden, Joe Grant and Berkeley Maps. San Jose, as the hub city would give us public transportation options to some of the event sites.

The committee members discussed this South Bay proposal but a number of issues soon surfaced.

1. Almaden and Joe Grant are quite open and steep with little runnable forest, but lots of poison oak.

2. April/May is when poison oak oils are the most virulent. The possibility of inflicting horrible rashes on some of our team members a few weeks before WOC was not a pretty thought.

3. With the exception of Almaden. These maps have been overused through the years.

4. Upon seeing the samples of the Hungarian Terrain on the 2009 WOC website it was evident that these BAOC parks were not similar to most of the Hungarian venues.

We looked around for alternative areas.

Coincidentally, we had just received a copy of our new Boggs Mountain map. A close look at this map showed some distinct similarities to the WOC 2009 samples. (Flatish plateaus and steep wooded hillsides) The disadvantages of the Boggs Mountain site is that it is in a remote location, a 2 hour drive from San Francisco Also, we had already scheduled an A Meet there for the Fall of 2007.

After much discussion the BAOC A Meet committee decided that if we expanded the Boggs map to include more hillsides that this could be an outstanding venue for the Team Trials. We are now in the process of field checking additional areas of the map not to be used until the 2009 Trials.

So our proposal is as follows:

Friday afternoon Sprint at Spring Lake Park, Santa Rosa, CA
Friday evening, Model event at Boggs Mountain
Saturday Middle at Boggs Mountain, Cobb, CA
Sunday Classic at Boggs Mountain

The dates are yet to be determined. But we are leaning towards the first weekend in May.

Attackpointers add your comments. We have 2 years to make this a worthy event. Your input will help.

Oh yeah, No poison oak has yet to be spotted at Boggs!

This proposal sounds very good and well thought-out. BAOC is an excellent club, and I am looking forward to attending the Team Trials hosted by them.

Sounds good to me too, but seeing as I don't know anything more specific about California I don't have much weight in this thread. I'm sure Eric Bone and many others will be happy for the lack of pioson oak...!

FWIW, from what I've heard of this, I also think this is an excellent Team Trials bid.

Indeed the main criticism raised in the other thread on BAOC events was due to an apparent _typo_ about using the map twice before the '09 trials, when it is only planned to be used once, for the '07 A-event this fall.

It wasn't even really a criticism, just a question of whether to come to this year's BAOC A meet or not (on the grounds that, as a non-team trialler, I care more about seeing new and interesting areas than about getting a sneak peek of future trials terrain.

Sounds like a good proposal and an interesting event. I think having a team trials with similar terrain to WOC is always a plus. Its also great that so much thought is going into this event so far in advance. I hope to be able to come.
