Ha.

There's not a non-West Point team in the IC Relay this year, and there wasn't in 2012, either.

Is there a way to see the team line-ups before the start, for better speculation? Though naturally, my money is on CSU.

Well, CascadeOC's team should be obvious (and killer).

Looks like CSU has 20 points from 9 runners, but that could go a thousand ways, some worth more of your money than others...

@Ian :)

I'm relieved to report that all three of Cascade/Canada 1 are here, although we're still entirely unsure of where "here" is, being that we may or may not have crossed about four state lines in ~30 miles of driving. Where I come from, people make fun of your state if you can get to another one in under 200 miles.

First time ever winning the top category for Cascade, and well done. CSU had the lead after legs 1 and 2, but a strong run by Will Enger did the deal. He passed Izzy Bryant partway through the leg, then she got back ahead, then he passed her for good. DVOA had to rally to take third after getting off to a bad start when their unnamed first leg runner baltered rather badly.

In the 6-point WCOC (Niels Lyng-Olsen) had a clear lead after the first leg but a strong run by Wyatt on the second leg made the difference and AJ held on for the win.

The 9-point was close between Chicago and CSU all the way, the teams never apart by more than a couple of minutes.

Thank you, DVOA, for a great weekend of racing! I don't have a strong opinion on the three legs versus four legs question. I guess four leaves more room for drama during the race, but three makes it easier for more clubs to field teams and to put their best feet forward with the teams they field. I find the latter reason most compelling, so I'm pleased with the three-leg format.
Apr 28, 2014 5:50 PM #
iansmith:
Agreed with ebone; thanks very much to DVOA for an excellent weekend. I found the reasons for the three-man format persuasive and suggest it be used in the future. It's hard to say how the modified format affected attendance, but the deeper field would seem good justification. The races on the second day were challenging, with good route choice.

Having three-legs, with the last being Orange or Yellow level, IMO, offered more opportunities for younger juniors to participate.

Also, one of each of the top 3-teams in each category had a junior running anchor.

In the context of a discussion about what is appropriate for yellow and orange courses recently, http://www.attackpoint.org/discussionthread.jsp/me... I was wondering a bit about how other people felt about the yellow course for the 6 and 9 point relays. While I personally enjoyed the course probably more than I would most yellow courses I've looked at in regular A-meets, in retrospect I had the feeling that it might actually be technically a little tough for younger runners who normally run on yellow courses. Starting with the very first leg, it seemed there wasn't much in the way of a linear feature heading off to the general vicinity of the first control, and some of the paths nominally crossing the open fields seemed very non-conspicuous at least at this time of year. In fact, from my perspective, the difference between the yellow, orange, and brown courses for the 9 point course looked like they differed mostly in distance and perhaps climb, and not so much in technical difficulty. Does anyone with a little more frequent experience in setting yellow courses have thoughts on this? I can't say I heard a lot of complaints on the day, so maybe I just usually set yellow courses too easy, or maybe the group of juniors that are competing on US champs relay teams represent a more highly trained end of the spectrum that normally runs yellow than more typical beginners, and setting something a little closer to a shorter version of the orange course is altogether appropriate in this context.
