My family and I will be posted in Kyrgyzstan this summer for a couple years. I see that they have a Kyrgyz O group. Anyone here have any experience orienteering in Central Asia?

No, although I visited Bishkek and Osh in 1998. I lived near Novosibirsk, Russia in 1993-94 but wasn't doing orienteering then. I did go to an O meet near Moscow on my last trip to Russia, that was fun. I noticed that you live in Monterey, so I'm guessing you speak Kyrgyz and/or Russian? Enjoy your posting, and I hope you'll have time to hike in the mountains!

http://fsokr.ucoz.ru/load/polozhenija/2 looks like a calendar, some of the info pages have contact info.

Here is a map from Issyk Kul http://www.orienteering.ural.ru/wp-content/uploads...

On that first link given by guskov, there's a popup telling you to update your "media player". The popup link doesn't go to Adobe, so I wouldn't trust it.

Thanks guys. No, I'm not in Monterey, not for years. Guess I should update my profile!

It is possible to do some orienteering in Central Asia and especially in Kirgistan. There seem to be a 5-day-comp each year at Issyk-Kul (I took part in 2012, as did guskov obviously). This comp is organized by the Kazakhs, though. The mapper of the above posted map (Rashid Khassanow) is based in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He is organising quite a lot of stuff in the surroundings. You should try to contact him - or better: his daughter that speeks very decent English and is a very nice person on top of that ;-).

Last year we travelled through Kazakhstan & the Kyrgyz Republic and had a lot of trouble finding any info about events until we got in direct contact with the woman organizing the 10th cup of LIK near Ust-Kamenogorsk (eastern Kazakhstan).

Her name was Irina Shcheglova and you can find her details (dated 2012) by Googling this:
Общественное объединение Детско-подростковый клуб «Сатори» Федерации спортивного ориентирования Восточно-Казахстанской области

At the competition there was one couple from the Kyrgyz Republic attending. At the time I got the impression that there was not much orienteering happening in the Kyrgyz Republic, much more going on in Kazakhstan, but even that is only a few times a year. The 10th cup of LIK was great fun though! It might be annual, in which case it should be on in the next couple of weeks.
