I noticed that garmin had released a new software for handling the garmin equipment. The new software only seems to upload to garmin connect and doesn't work together with communicator plugin for uploading to AP. Is this something can be fixed or we stick with the old ANT agent?

I saw this the other day, read a few forums and they all seem to suggest that people have downloaded Garmin Express then not been able to connect to whatever other program they use and ended up deleting it and sticking with the ANT agent - so that seems the best recommendation at the moment.

Ahhh, Garmin. Love their watches, hate their software.

I installed Garmin Express and then discovered that it removed the Communicator so I was no longer able to upload to other applications such AP, Strava, etc. I have since deleted GE and re-loaded their Communicator. With Garmin Connect trying to compete with Strava, Map My Run, etc. it's not surprising.

If Garmin does it well enough, it seems like people will just use their fancy phones instead of Garmin's fancy watches. What's their end game?

On Monday, Strava and Garmin Connect announced a partnership in the form of one-way data sharing. Riders using Garmin Connect can upload rides directly to Strava, as well as MapMyFitness sites MapMyRun and MapMyRide and Endomondo, another fitness and ride tracker. The partnership is the result of Garmin Connect opening up its API (think of it as a back door to Connect’s databases) to Strava, MapMyFitness, and Endomondo.

The Api to Garmin Connect used to be open but they closed it made a new one with a $5000 entrance fee. They are now breaking the old communicator plugin method which is what they pushed a few years back to the like of Ken and Attackpoint.

At least Garmin changed the express to also store a local copy of the .fit file on the computer. Maybe it is possible for AP to in some way read this file and upload the activity?

You can still have Garmin Express & ANT agent (probaly need to reinstall) running on your PC but not at the same time. Make sure neither gets launched on start up (msconfig>startup and uncheck relevant boxes).

loefaas, you can upload the local copy of the FIT file to AP with the "upload files" option. The only trick for now (which I plan to fix soon) is that the local file doesn't have a .fit extension, you need to rename it before AP will accept it.

I dunno. Last time I updated something at the Garmin site it started storing the file with the .fit extension.
