Type: Orienteering - National

added by: PG

We're on again for this year. Talked to Mike (the Mike of Mike's Maze), and he is cool. The date -- first time ever on a weekend -- is Satruday, August 24, location is Sunderland, MA.

On the agenda will once again be an assortment of CMOUSA's national championships:

3 pm: Classic Champs
4:30 pm: Relay Champs (PG will determine teams)
6 pm: party at Bub's BBQ
8 pm: Night Champs (bring a headlamp)

----------------

Update 8/21 -- Everything is on schedule. Not to late to sign up, send an e-mail to pg@crocker.com. Current entry list below.

Update 8/4 -- The corn is growing nicely, the maze has been cut, we have a map. So barring natural disasters we're good to go for Saturday, August 24. As far as courses -- the classic will have a winning time of something in the vicinity of 15 minutes, but it's really tricky orienteering so it's easy to be 2 or 3 times that long. The relay will be two-person teams, with the first leg rather short and the second leg rather long. Teams will be made up accordingly. The reason for the relay is part social, part give you a second chance to figure out the maze.

And then the night-O. Still pondering, but I think the format will be mass-start modified score-O with 3 levels, something like the following -- 15 controls out, level 1 has to get controls 11 to 15 in any order; level 2 has to get 6 to 10 in any order and then 11 to 15 in any order; and level 3 has to get 1 to 5 in any oder, then 6 to 10 in any order, then 11 to 15 in any order. Or something like that. Or something completely different. Stay tuned. And bring a headlamp or flashlight. Controls will be the normal daytime ones, no reflectors.

----------------

By the way, almost forgot, the event this year will be a joint production of CMOUSA and the Western Connecticut OC. WCOC, sensing that NEOC is consolidating its operations within I-495 and abandoning Western MA, eastern CT, and RI, seems to be making a move to become the dominant O' club in New England. Will the next step be a leveraged buyout of NEOC?

Entry will be by pre-registration only, with an as-yet-to-be-determined entry limit, probably in the range of 50 to 75. To enter, send an e-mail to me (pg@crocker.com) giving your name, O' age, gender, club, SI #, and whether or not you have a sense of humor.

Organizers reserve the right to reject any entry. Entry fee, to be determined, will be payable on the day only. I expect the entry fee, which covers the three O' events but not the food and drink at Bub's, will be $15, or $10 for juniors.

More info to follow as I figure things out.
