Running 25:00 [1] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

Another v gentle bimble around the warm-up maps and a bit of warm down

Orienteering 58:05 [4] 9.33 km (6:14 / km) +140m 5:47 / km

WMOC long final @ Grib Skov, another nice mostly runnable forest, an even hotter day. Knee still sore and trying not to get carried away with my expectations after the middle result...
Long steady bimble out to #1, #2 looked horrific so was very safe and slow, same to #3 but wasted 20s checking a control i knew wasn't mine. Next two ok but lost time to #6 by faffing then seemed to lose a minute to #7, more through route choice than getting lost. Ran hard to #8 but failed to do the fine navigation at the end of the leg and missed to the right (45s). #9 & #10 ok, a few seconds lost at the end of #11 by not knowing what feature I was looking for, then got confused by the veg mapping at #12 wasting maybe 30s. #13 and #14 were good, then ran hard on the roads to #15, only to fluff the fine nav and go to the wrong control for another 45s loss. A bit more fannying about at #16 losing maybe 30s and then ok to the finish.
13th (again), 9s behind Clive. Hakan Eriksson did 47.40, bronze was 54.32. Realistically that's another good result but a bit frustrated by the stupid mistakes in the circle. More practice and patience needed! Maybe could have attacked a bit harder in the first half - was 34th at #8 but from there to the finish was quicker than all but the first two - but of course it could equally have gone horribly wrong :-)

Running 20:00 [1] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)

Warming up, very gingerly at first, and then a bimble around the warm up map trying to remember how to use a compass

Orienteering 29:27 [4] 4.76 km (6:11 / km) +85m 5:41 / km

WMOC middle final, same forest as yesterday, bit warmer. Went in with a very sore knee and low expectations, just wanting to do enough to stay in the A final for the long on Friday, so rather surprised myself with an outbreak of competence.
Set off very carefully round the first loop, stopping to make a plan and check compass etc, and fannied about a bit on the way to #4, prob lost 20s. Stretched out to #5 and went into the green a bit to the right of the line but relocated off the blown trees and only 10-15s lost here. Very slow and safe through #6 and #7 which were very vague, then a bit of a dither on the way to #8. Good to #9 and caught my minute man (a Finn) by #10 at the start of the arena run through. In 20th at this point but started to push on a bit on the last loop. #12 was straightforward, #13 a bit bingo - I went into the green v slowly and was 15m to the right of the control when the Finn punched it. A bit of a banana to #14, went north and round the path to #15, then was slightly left of #16 losing another few seconds, then ok to the finish.
Pleased to be under 30 mins, very pleased to finish 13th, less than 2.30 behind the winner. Not sure I've ever beaten Clive in a forest race before!

Running 20:00 [1] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)

warm up & down, probably not enough of either

Orienteering 48:22 [3] 8.14 km (5:57 / km) +85m 5:39 / km

WMOC forest qualification @ Tisvilde Hegn. Warm day, mostly runnable forest but lots of vague veg & contours. Inevitably a bit of a shambles, given how rarely I orienteer in forests and general lack of technique :-)
Trundled off to #1, pleasantly surprised to find it, ditto #2 and #3. Long run to #4 went ok but then piled into a vague area without a plan and with predictable consequences - big loop to relocate, maybe 2.30 lost. #5 ok and then safe route to #6 - a small depression - got within 15m but didn't see it and went out to the path to relocate - another 90s gone. Bit of a fanny about finding #7 too (20s), couldn't work the contours out in this bit at all and was down to 28th at this point. #8 ok then another long run to #9 which was in dark green, missed just to the left, and wandered around in some unmapped contour detail for a while before finding it (+1 min). Exited 90 degrees in the wrong direction but worked it out, now aware that i'd burnt my margin of error and couldn't afford any more fuckups. Bit sketchy to #10, ok through the next few and tried to go straight to #14 - got stuck in the green for a bit and very relieved when the control I could see ahead of me turned out to be mine :-)
Finished 9.33 down on Hakan Eriksson but qualified for A final I think. Knee very sore throughout - felt i was limping by the end. And managed to cut my head on a branch just after #2 - these forests are dangerous :-)
