Race Evaluation

2006 North American Championships (Golden Leaf Ori: Middle Course 8

bshields

1. Straight. Took me a little while to warm into map reading, so a fairly hesitant leg.
2. Went a slight bit right of the line, intending to hit the limestone pavement and then run along the east side of it, which is what I did. From the trail I just went straight.
3. +01:00Plunged into the leg without properly planning and reading the map. Consequently, overshot the control. Noticed pretty quickly that things were wrong and corrected (relatively) quickly.
4. To the right of the line, between the cliffs and around the back of the limestone pavement into the control.
5. +00:05Straight. Through the narrow portion of the marsh, through the cliffs just before the control, up onto the limestone pavement with a moment's hesitation before realizing I should be at the cliff 10m to my right.
6. Basically straight, though I went south around the big cliff and then over the pavement and followed the reentrant into the control.
7. Straight.
8. Straight to the cliffs on the line, went N along the cliffs, then straight to the control.
9. Straight.
10. Went left of the line, thinking that the marshes were too indistinct to navigate off of, so I better have something more concrete (like boulders) to use. So, I went hesitantly but correctly to the trail, then headed off towards #4, got past a cliff or two, and thought that we'd already had a control in a depression surrounded by limestone pavement. Which indeed we had, so I corrected and headed towards #10, saw the cliff to the SW of the control and ran straight to the control. It's a great feeling to find a control exactly where you know it should be.
11. +00:10Straight. Took too long to read my map when I came across the swamp which I knew would be there.
12. Decided to play it safe and take the small trails to the big trail, then followed the pavement until it cut right, at which point I ran over the top, around the rootstalk and into the control.
13. Hit the small trail, over the fence, N around the marsh, between the two northern cliffs, straight into the control.
14. +00:15Ran through the pockets of clearing, straight to the depression SE of the real control. Didn't notice that one on the map, plus there were a bunch of lost looking people milling around in that depression, so I stopped for a few seconds before realizing where I was on the map and then dashing off to the control pulling the lost people along behind
15. +00:15Patrick passed me, so I thought I would try to stick to him, but quickly decided that I would get lost at that speed, so I relocated off the set of cliffs with the fence between, which I basically climbed over (would have been much better to go around) and then carefully found my way along the indistinct trail system to the control (where I could see Patrick now punching).
16. Took trails all the way.
17. More trails.
F. More trails.
