Race Evaluation

Hudson Highlander 7:

BorisGr

1. Starting out with team "Group Effort" - walking up the hill with Kenny and Misha, among others. Joe is off to the left somewhere, being sneaky as usual. We come in from the left, getting to the control after a bunch of other people.
2. Pretty much straight with the pack, go along the bottom of the hill right into the control as a bunch of people go too high.
3. Around the green, up the reentrant, across another hill, and in.
4. Pretty straight. Catch Graeme Ackland and see Eric Bone leaving the control.
5. Staying behind Eric and Graeme most of the way. Run the trail SE towards the road, then cut at the clearing. Run on the road forever as a CSU pack, then off on the trail going close to Kanawauke. Up through stony ground, along marsh and in. Pleased to see Graeme and Eric at the control.
6. Graeme runs off in some strange direction, Eric does too but comes back to us. Running with Kenny, Ross, Misha, and Joe here.
7. Get into a shoving match with Joe on the road run back to the map exchange. Say hi to my parents there and take off for Pole Brook with Ross Return from Pole Brook 1st, about 1:30 ahead of Eric. Spend a while drinking and eating, as I always do. Eric catches me coming to 7.
8. Eric and i take different route choices and both mess up. I stay low and cross the green in a pretty good spot, coming to the top of the hill. See Eric to the south and automatically run there, not looking at the map. I find myself at the cliffs SW of the control, by the edge of the green and follow Eric back to it.
9. Eric is gone by the time i leave 8, and i don't see him again. Straight over the top and down to the control.
10. +00:30Remembering this area from last year, i decide to go way around on the trail. Leave the trail when it starts climbing, cross all the rocky ground slowly and come to the circle. I go too far right at first, have to come back to the control. See a cadet running away from the flag really fast.
11. Back across the rocks to the trail, where some 2nd loop dude tells me that Eric is 30 seconds ahead of me. Hmmph. Catch the cadet coming into the control.
12. The cadet sprints ahead of me, going too far to the right. I never see him again until he finishes while I eat my 4th bowl of stew. Nice, but slow run along the top.
13. On the road, pretty slow. Tired now.
14. I made a point of seeing 14 on my way to 7, so this wasn't a problem.
15. Pretty unhappy about the forking, as I have only Eric Bone on my loop, while Kenny, Misha, Joe, Greg, and Graeme are all on Rockhouse.
16. +01:30Slowly adjusting to the 10000 scale, I run along counting reentrants, but stupidly looking back for Eric. This threw off my concentration, and I overran it to the next re-entrant. As i leave the control, I see Alexei Azarov coming in. Grrrrr.
17. Go over the top of the hill to minimize the green, catch Eric (who passed me on 16) in the stony reentrant.
18. Leave 17 with Eric, but get away from him in the green.
19. Straight over the top of the hill into the huge reentrant.
20. Up on the hill, through the nice woods up there. Stay on the left side of the hilltop until I see the control. Still all alone...
21. +00:30Up to the first hilltop, then down the rocky ground around the green. Got a little lower than i wanted and had to climb a bit to the control.
22. Right around the green.
23. +01:30Around the marsh to the right. Climbed the ridge, didn't see the control, got confused, climbed back down, ran around, climbed the ridge again, saw the control. Feel stupid.
24. Straight down the line.
25. Tired, i come into the map exchange as Eric leaves. My dad tells me Kenny and Misha are about 5 minutes up on me, and i'm 4th. Good to know Joe, Greg, and Graeme haven't passed me. I spend a couple of minutes eating here and am pretty full when i start the last loop.
26. Up on the road.
27. Along the road till the small clearing on the right, then veeeeeery slowly up to the powerline and even slower up to the ridge. Hamstrings cramping up pretty badly here. Then down the reentrant to the flag.
28. +00:30Went pretty straight - nice woods until the spiky berry bushes around the control. Lost some time when i cut in early through the bushes.
29. +02:30Fought through more bushes to the edge of the parking lot. Hope to see someone ahead of me, but didn't. Up the trail threw the clearing, then along the hillside to the pit. No control! Things look right... I run to the other north side of the ridge, everything still looks right. Stop and ream the map for a while. Realize i must be at the pit SW of the control. Climb up to the real pit and give up all hope of catching anyone.
30. Straight down, hit the reentrant pretty low. As i am ready to turn right and climb to the control, i am surprised to see it right in front of me.
31. Up the road, across to the trail, along the nice hill, up through the first line of cliffs, up through the second, and in.
32. Went a little low around the first set of cliffs, then through the trail junctions, down to the stream, where I could see the control from far away.
33. Slowly down to the stream/marsh, right along the edge for a while until i saw the first building on the other side. Climbed up to the cabins, then across the road, down the dirt road, and to the powerline. Crossed at a non-green spot, then up the stony ground, and pretty straight to the control.
34. +01:30Went too far south out of the control, then corrected and hit the road. Coming into the circle, i smelled burgers and lost all concentration. Ran around in the circle for maybe a minute with everyone watching from the finish. Great.
F. Finish in 4th place. Nice Highlander, though i wish i had better luck with the forking.
