Race Evaluation

Hudson Highlander 7:

kensr

1. Up the hill on the left side. Taking it easy because I haven't warmed up yet. Time includes ~20 sec waiting to punch.
2. In a mob.
3. Lost a bit of time on this one.
4. Catch up with large crowd here -- Peggy D, Tim Good.
5. Cut towards road, pick up trail, run road. Foot starts to hurt (arch) from running on hard surface in o-shoes. Trail around edge of hill to stoney reentrant and up to marsh.
6. Back along west side of marsh, in from R side. To changeover and Rockhouse.
7. Up trail along lake -- really rough until I picked up the larger trail parallel to it. Across marsh and up reentrant.
8. +05:00Cut across green to clear ridge slope. No attack point on featureless slope and ran down past control. Looped around and back up, finally picking up ditch leading to control.
9. Straight over hilltop.
10. +03:00Crossed brook and straight to control. Vegatation looked ok at first, so thought running would alright. Kept getting worse and slower. Finally just kept pushing until I came out of the west end of the green and looked for the control.
11. +04:00Crossed first faint trail and thought I was at second one. Lost position and attack point. Got to circle but no clue as to exact location. Saw runners leaving and backtracked.
12. Nice run along ridge.
13. Road.
14. Down and across stone wall.
15. Exchange and on to Pole Brook.
16. Around L of cliff and in to control. Picked up Peggy, Tim and Charlie Leonard. Peggy wandered off; Charlie stuck with me for the next 8 controls.
17. Off to R and up reentrant.
18. Straight through heavy brush.
19. Went from bump to bump to reentrant.
20. Trail along marsh, then up a bit and back down.
21. Through green, not bad.
22. Straight.
23. Across marsh, off a bit R.
24. To road and back up.
25. Picked up pace to lose Charlie. On my own on this map.
26. Back up along road.
27. Road to camp and up over saddle. Tim coming up slope behind me, but not gaining any ground. Ran out of splits at this point; balance of course took 1:22:26.
28. Road to clearing. Could see control, but had 6' wall of barberries in way. Finally went past control and barberries thinned slightly. Hey, no thorns, just scratchy.
29. Coming out was much easier than going in. Found game trail and followed it to power line. Had this control location at a meet a few years ago, so knew route to it.
30. Got to edge of reentrant and looked for control.
31. Up road to clearing, then L across brook to trail. Up slope to L of marsh. To small bump on hillside and up through cliffs to control.
32. Down to stream and up reentrant to control.
33. +05:00Up along marsh, angled up when bushes started getting thick. To road, through camp, down to power line by lake. Good crossing near N end. Followed reentrant up hill, branched off L to big rock. Took bearing and paced to control location. Slightly low and totally befuddled (went brain-dead about 5 minutes too early). Suddenly, Jeff Sager, Charlie, Peggy and Tim coming running out of control 10 m away behind bushes.
34. Now in a pack scrambling to last control. Pass Tim, but Jeff is too fast on a run-in.
F. Everyone finishes in a clump.
