Race Evaluation

WCOC Osbornedale State Park: Red

PBricker

1. +00:15First two legs felt a bit shaky. Hit the stone wall too far left, and though I corrected quickly, some damage had been done.
2. +00:15Through the marshy area to the north side of the pond, then the trail through the green, then angling up to the stone wall where the trail adjoins it. Took the trail and attacked from just past the bend (a tad too far, losing maybe 15 s.). No real problems on this leg, but a bit slow and overly careful.
3. Trails across the open area, betwenss the ponds, to the road, to the end of the parking, unmapped trail along the edge of the open area, and spiked it. Going between the ponds instead of cutting to the road sooner might have cost some seconds.
4. Above the big cliff, through the big reentrant. Spike.
5. Looked risky to go straight through the open area and medium green, so went NE along the road cutting in past the dark green at the stone wall. But it was slow going getting down to the stream. A bit farther north than I wanted, but I knew where I was and read cliffs and reentrants up the hillside right to it. Spike.
6. +01:45When I got to the steep rocky hillside I intentionally angled down to the right where the footing was good, planning on swinging back around to the reentrant. But I dropped too low and didn't see the flag when I went by. No problem correcting, but a lot of time was lost.
7. +03:30Long climb up to the trail, then along the trail NE past the junction planning to cut in as soon as it looked OK. But it was thick everywhere, so I went all the way to the open area. Disaster: thorny vines everywhere. Got out of that to the north heading for what the map showed as white woods between the green. Never saw anything I would count as white, and the medium green was pretty dark. Finally emerged south of the control with the knoll SW of the control in front of me. Went close enough to confirm it was the knoll I thought, then spiked it from there. Miserable leg.
8. Ran due west to the trail, then right at the junction, up the reentrant, through the saddle, down the reentrant, cutting over right to it. It may have been a bit lower than mapped: I went between the two cliffs and spiked it.
9. To the trail, to the stream, then up the rocky hillside. Spike.
10. Through the depression, then up the broad reentrant, right to it. Spike, but not moving very fast.
11. Stayed high to the stone wall, then cut down through the undergrowth, having to weave through it a bit. Attacked from the end of the parking area. About 50 meters before the control I went by a white control (at stone wall junction?) where a lady was punching. She yelled, trying to be helpful, "are you looking for 9?" I yelled back: "it's not my control" Then she says, "it's number 50." That stopped me dead in my tracks because my control was 50. I said: "Then it's in the wrong place." But I started towards it to check it out, at which point she says: "Oh, it's 59." At which point I proceeded to spike my control. Probably lost at least 10 seconds, maybe as much as 20.
12. I went around to the left, though it looks like there should have been a path through the vegetation allowing one to go straighter, saving precious seconds. Walked up the hill, past the boulders. Spike.
13. Great open woods running. Spike.
F. Sprinted, through the parking area. Felt like I had way too much energy left at the finish.
