Race Evaluation

2012 Western States Orienteering Championships: Day 1 (Saturday) - Brown

DWildfogel

1. Figured this one out the night before, so gave me time to think about #2.
2. Wanted no part of that sage covered hill, so went around; nailed it.
3. Somewhat conservative root, but moved quickly and nailed it.
4. +00:30Lost my place a bit heading towards the aspens, but realized it didn't matter, so kept going. Didn't find a great place to cross, but got through OK. Probably went a bit too high on the hillside. At the end, didn't look carefully enough at the map, so checked the boulder cluster below the cliff before climbing up
5. +02:30Figured I'd avoid sage by getting up on spur and following the indistinct trail. Never saw the trail, but sped down the spur anyway. This made me feel happy until I saw the fence ahead and, apparently for the first time, realized that there should be aspens immediately to my right and instead there was a series of spurs. Must've never looked to my right or at my compass. Ran due N until I was on the last spur before the aspens, and fortunately the flag was 50m to my right.
6. +00:15Heading S, looking at map "upside down", confused which boulder was the SW one, so went to the uphill one first.
7. +00:30Didn't see the route to the right that course setter Neal later pointed out to me. Very tired - and slow - going up last hill.
8. +00:10Gave it my all, but was starting to feel sick to my stomach from the effort-heat-altitude. Hit my attack point, the bare rock on the S side of the road, but somehow didn't recognize that the "boulder" I was seeing a little to the right of my bearing had the bag on it's far side "cliff".
F. +00:03Stomach getting bad, went a little less than all out.
