West Point A-Meet: Red-1

jima

1. Over ran a bit, trying to match up boulders on the ground with those on the map.
2.
3. Found a pretty good deer path to follow. Hesitated a bit workign my way through some of the small knolls with boulders just before the control location.
4.
5. Saw the marsh as a go-around-right or go-around-left leg, missing the obvious dry strip between what was actually 2 marshes. Opted for the right side - was OK for the first bit, then ran into some blowdown interspersed with thick briars. Lost a bit of time wading through it. Was OK once I hit the trail - pegged the control
6. Up and over, or take the trail to the left? Opted for the trail - cuts out some climb and don't have to push uphill through the blueberry bushes. Trail through the saddle could have shown the distinct curves better, but went in from the rock features. Pegged it.
7.
8. Around to the right - Somewhat wasted route choice leg - if either or both controls had been further east, going around the other way could have been a viable option. Cut the corner by the tip of the marsh, back onto the trail, past the bend, up the reentrant, in over the bare rock, then a lot more fight than mapped...
9. no problem
10. Around N end of the marsh and fight area, hit the linear clearing jaut about at the corner. Spiked it.
11. Right between the 2 marshes, over the ridge, then ws a bit surprised to see the big hill rising in front of me. God visibility and a lot of details on the map sort of masked the size of the hill. Careful through the flatter area, contour details very accurate. Spiked it just after Tim Good came in from the S looking frustrated.
12. Pretty much beelined the first part, Tim ahead of me. Past a couple of wet sections, picking off major rock features and a couple of broad reentrants. Switched off my brain for a while, and when I hit the pretty distinct line of rock features just prior, thought we still had a couple hundred meters to go. Realized I was overrunnign when I looked down and saw water (Turkey Hill Pond). Did a bit of wandering too high up, trying to match the terrain to the map. Figured I was too high, headed down, saw some activity, then the control. Tim's long gone.
13. Leading, then chasing, a junior (Hunter Cornish?) down the hill. Hit the trail, over the stream, trail bend, in by the large boulder. I think we're dead on contour-wise, but it's not quite matching up. Distance is right but no reentrant and no control. Looking downhill, see a control, but it looks like a boulder and it's too near the trail. Hear some action above me, foplks chargin down the hill, obviously having just left a control. Slog up to it.
14. Manage to not break my neck or leg getting dwon the hill.
F.
