Sprint Series Final & US Relay Champs: 4pt Leg 1 Green

2. Most of the crowd seemed t go slightly left, but I was behind Alexei and we were going slightly right. Vanessa was right behind me, and this is where I first noticed that she can really move! We were going to fast for me to be able to hold my map still enough to read, but I could see that we were heading in the right direction and I had a sense of how far we had traveled. When we got close, Alexei slowed down, and I had some trouble figuring out what was what, probably because I was looking at #8 instead of #2. We did a little loop, and the pack arrived from our left, and everybody fishhooked around a little bit and found it. I was the last one of the bunch to punch in.
3. Up ahead, everybody was climbing the hill, except for Jon Torrance, who was going where I was looking, around to the right. Well, that's good company, so I ran down the reentrant and picked up the trails, although I didn't have Jon in sight for long. David Onkst was right behind me, and we climbed up at the end and landed in exactly the right spot, but there was nobody around. I had to hesitate on the edge of the circle to read the details, and saw that we had to drop down a line to get to the spur, which was correct. Just as we punched in, the pack showed up.
4. A little too far to the right probably cost me a few seconds.
5. Everybody pulled away gradually as we lugged up the hill. I think this is where David lost his contact lens and dropped off, and from here on in I was pretty much with just Vanessa. Went though a bit of barberry near the end, no problem, and spotted Torrance up ahead for the last time — he had gotten caught in more of the thorns.
6. A bit to far left, came in from the reentrant.
7. Sweetest leg of the course.
8.
9. A route error. I decided to go right around the hill to avoid some climb. A closer look shows that there's really not much climb to be saved, and I went a couple of hundred meters perpendicular to what I needed to do. Came in at the corner of the field and stayed in the woods to avoid having to fight through the nasty field margin. Had to read the control description to realize that the control was behind me when I got to the wall corner.
10. Vanessa got ahead of me here briefly, for the only time.

12. A little too far right, almost heading for #14.

15. Through the parking lots.
