Race Evaluation

Western States + Intercollegiate Championships: Green2

Charlie

1. Started up the reentrant (after all, that's what Sam did 2 minutes ahead of me) but then angled up spur left to cross fence at stile near road bend. Remembered it from yesterday. Then pretty straight across reentrants. Could see the reentrant narrowing down, and then the knoll and the saddle. Turns out to be the same saddle I crossed on the way to #10 yesterday.
2. Down reentrant near fence, right to trail, and from trail bend across flat and up through saddle, then pretty much on compass straight and could see the wooded reentrant from a distance.
3. Slightly left of line, keeping knolls on my left, and then up the spur left of the catclaw infestation, across on compass. Wooded reentrant again very easy to see.
4. Checked off the two largish spurs and then straight in. Up small reentrant to pop out in yellow a few meters R of flag
5. To fence corner and climbed over, then climbed spur a little soon and hit catclaw on other side, corrected and could see knolls and saddle from on top.
6. Bad map reading
Confused parallel features

Well, this was a disaster. It all stemmed from looking at the power line on the map and thinking it was a fence, and then trying to figure out how I was going to avoid crossing it. Came up with going up the hill to the trail, then cutting in past the fence and approaching along the big spur from the S. So up the trail looking for the fence, and getting pretty involved, and pretty soon past the trail junction and seeing the S facing reentrant opening up on my left. Yikes! Back to the more EW trail, and follow it for a bit before down a spur, but wrong spur, so down reentrant and then up right spur.
7. Bad map reading
Lacked confidence
Hesitated

Down the big reentrant and around the bend, looking for the lone tree and then up the spur R of catclaw. Hesitated a bit and stopped to look for the non-existent fence again.
8. Down reentrant and crossed trail at trail loops. Got sucked off a bit R by big dot knoll, but then got smart enough to aim for the woods and right up the reentrant.
9. R of line up largish reentrant near fence, then keeping fence on R around next reentrant and across knoll. Seemed very tiring and long, but split not too bad.
10. Up and over, rolling under fence, as it looked pretty high and there was room underneath. Opposite larger reentrant that goes further up the hill, so angled L to correct reentrant and could see woods in there from a distance. No flag in sight, but from clue I knew enough to go down to the jct.
11. Long and slow, almost dead straight. Keeping an eye out for large yellow spur that should be on my right.
12. Get going!
