Race Evaluation

2002 Billygoat Run:

Charlie

1. Once I got up on the trail I was bummed I didn't look early enough to see what a good skip #1 was. Big crowd went left at fork before pond, so I went right. Paul Bisset went up to the Pond and then cut left on the small trail. Gord Hunter passed me, but then drifted up the hill right of the control.
2. Directly south to the trail, cut in by the stone wall. Absolutely alone, so I got worried, but it was fine.
3. Pretty straight. I could see Gord down the hill to my right a ways.
4. Got confused by all the trails, ended up hitting the big trail N of where I thought, but ok. Slippery getting down to the control, lots of folks, including Judy Dickinson, I think.
5. Behind Paul Bisset, but beat him into it, I think.
6. Paul Bennett said I had a lot of folks following me. This seemed like my best leg. Fairly straight, through the marsh, up the re-entrant, reading all the way in.
7. Nasty leaving 6. I got hung up badly in the downed hemlocks, and lots of people passed me, including the Alschwedes, Steve Stibler, Paul Bennet. Hit the road where the trail comes out, then ran E on the power line 200 m, up the reentrant and under the cliffs, back and forth with Steve S.
8. Right and down the reentrant, near Paul Bisset. Got a little confused and the Dentinos passed and went straight into it.
9. At this point I could still see #9, but it was fading fast, and #s10 and 14 were gone from a pin hole in the map case. Got a little sloppy, went NW to the trail, by #15, saw the Dentinos again up ahead, then Steve Tarry looking confident, so I followed him in, since the circle was now melted on my map.
10. I now had no map between where I was and the circle for #11. Thought about skipping 10, but not sure I could find the way to 11 either, so I followed Gord. He led me through a knee deep swamp, which was not confidence inspiring. Eventually Steve T. showed up again and led us in.
11. Followed Steve real close.
12. Including 5 minutes or so going back to the finish and negotiating for a new map. From there it seemed the easiest route was around the trail leaving SW from the start.
13. Reading things well, Pavlina showed up as I was punching.
14. Around S side of pond, again. Pavlina passed me. She was walking, I was running. Passed her back on the trail, and caught Gord again by the bend in the trail just W of the control.
15. Around the hill just R of the straight line. Pavi passed me back and was motoring.
16. skip
17. On the trail. Saw Paul Bennett at the control, who had arrived from 16.
18. Out ahead of Paul, cut in before the hill after the stream, and got in the wrong reentrant. Just cost a few seconds, but Paul caught up again.
19. Out well ahead of Paul, but absolutely blew this control; got up on the hill and didn't see the flag until I looked down and saw Paul punching. Not so swift, especially since I had been there before looking for a new map!
F. Hurray! Thanks to Bob Bullions, Mairead Young, and the rest of the fine crew.
