NEOC Troll Cup Day 2: Red

jjcote

1. Mark Dominie had a minute head start, and went up the trail, back and forth on the switchbacks. Ed White had a 30 second lead and went right, toward the saddle. I followed Mark, but went straight up the hill, cutting the switchbacks, and followed him. We all met at the control.
2. Mark leading, we went too far west on the trail, which I realized, but followed him anyway. Ed cut off in the right spot, and got swallowed up by the green crud. Coming in from the NW side of the hill, Mark and I had an easy time.
3. I led this one, drifted right, and saw the pond coming up. Ed was on track and got it, but Mark and I turned too hard to the right, and got suckered in by another patch of high ground to the west.
4. Ed was gone, Mark and I swung way too far left, which wasn't good, but had the benefit of giving us a great attack from the trail bend. Mark went too far right; I went the right way, but got distracted by another knoll on the edge of the circle. We arrived at about the same time, and saw Peter Gagarin (vetter) sitting at the control. Mark asked about Ed and learned that he hadn't arrived yet.
5. I pulled away from Mark on the trail, then Ed went running past me. Cut off trail in the right spot, but went the wrong way around a marsh, and it seemed like a long way to get to the boulder. I was trailing when we got there.
6. All three took slightly different routes up the hill and arrived simultaneously. Mark saw Tom Bruce up ahead.
7. Mark went right, Ed and I went left up through the saddle and along the north base of the hill. Got to about the edge of the circle, and went too low. Saw somebody down below who I swore was Mark, but it couldn't have been (maybe it was Tom). Started after him, then realized he was leaving the control when the cliffs indicated I was too low. Turned and trudged back up the hill. Ed had gotten it shortly before me, and I encountered the Blue leaders at the control (Mark was close behind, but I never saw him).
8. Tore down the hill with the Blue guys, then was caught by Alar Ruutopold just before the control.
9. Never looked at my map on this one, just chased Alar, and Ed (who we caught). We passed Tom, standing still and looking at his map, and the three M40 leaders were all within 5 meters.
10. Pretty much just followed Alar, going pretty straight, although we hit the reentrant low and had to climb up. I guess Ed was even further to the right. Thought I saw Ed at the control, then realized it was Carl Childs.
11. Carl went right, Alar went left up to the trail, and I went after Alar. He was pulling away on the trail, which had a lot of traffic on it (mostly Brown course runners). About halfway to the control I was falling too far behing Alar, who appeared to be taking the all-trail route, so I cut off to the right, and nailed the trail junction 250 m ESE of the control. Trudged up the hill, came out in the slash, and saw Carl coming up from my right, and Alar coming in from the power line, and we arrived close together, with Alar leading and me trailing.
12. Following those guys, but lost sight of them when we left the power line. Hit the small trail, turned left, and Alar came up from behind me. Went straight up the reentrant from the trail junction, while Alar took the trail, but he arrived just ahead of me.
F. With the cold I've been fighting, I was lucky to have kept up with Alar at all, never mind try to race him up the chute. But a great run for me, and my first ever Troll Cup award!
