Race Evaluation

Hong Kong Annual Champs+WRE cum Asia Junior Champs: Middle ME/MO/M20

1. D P 3 +03:20Followed trail out of start until after cresting the hill. As I descent toward the control, I mistakenly thought the large boulder I saw to be the boulder cluster just outside east of the control circle, so I corrected towards the right and ended up in the wrong re-entrant. In retrospect, I could have done a better job of checking my bearing, and also use more features to check-off as I come down the hill.
2. P R 3 +06:50A terrible plan and route choice here. I failed to see the much easier and faster left-hand route via big trail. Instead went to the right down the spur and through the marsh. I did further damage by hesitation to cross the marsh and wasting valuable time finding a dryer crossing point.
3. R 3 +01:00Took the right-hand route up the white re-entrant, which was probably slower than going left and follow the trail up the spur.
4. D P R 2 Easy contour leg
5. D P 2 +01:00A trail running leg. Time lost due to 1) poor exit run to trail, 2) slower running speed on trail, 3) not taking the shortcut up the re-entrant from the trail.
6. D 3 +02:30Took the left-hand trail route, but ran much further along after the junction before finding a whole in the green to get through. Then forgot about my position as I went off-trail and didn't make the necessary adjustments. So I searched for the boulder to the east when I should have go to the west for the control. Corrected the mistake when I hit the re-entrant. Another route choice would have been the right-hand route up the hill and then descend the re-entrant at the saddle.
7. P 1 +00:20Nearly all trail to the control. Time lost probably due to slow exit from #6 to the trail.
8. R 3 +00:50I took the around route skirting the rough open, which had elephant tracks leading to the control. But this was still an inferior choice to the more direct route up the re-entrant where it's mapped as light and medium green.
9. P D P 3 +05:30Really big mistake here! In the haste to make up for lost time, I underestimated the difficulty of the control. I didn't hold the compass bearing well enough and did a poor job of visualizing the control. I probably was off a bit and just missed seeing the first time passing through. Then I proceeded to search around, up and down, aimlessly for the flag without success. Finally, decided to get to the top of the hill and re-attack. Should have realized sooner this remedial tactic to better control time lost.
10. P 3 +00:10Use same tactic as last control, attacking from the top of the hill.
11. P P 3 +00:15This area has been used as control location many times before, so I knew where to get in for better runnability. Attacked off the trail and then from the stone wall.
12. P D R 3 +00:55Had solid attack point and check-off features near the control, but due to poor direction exiting #11, I picked up the wrong trail. Wanted to run the smaller trail inbetween the green but instead got on the larger one further to the east. Couldn't quite make sense of things as I turned north after passing the green. After some confusion and hesitation, finally relocated myself when I spotted the yellow grave ahead.
F. D P R 3 +01:10Poor route choice. Headed straight north which involved more climb and a bit of fight through light green vegetation. Compounded the problem by turning the wrong direction once I hit the trail. Should have headed NE pass the grave to pick up the small trail out to Finish instead.
