Susquehanna Stumble: Long

Nadim

1. +01:30After getting to the meet site at the scheduled start time, I got ready within 10 minutes and was at the line when everyone took off. My map had fallen out of the case. Fumbling with my thumb compass and control sheet I couldn't get it back in. Finally 1:01 after the mass start, I had it together. I saw some people still running away from the start so w/o looking at my map I chased only to discover that they were headed elsewhere (Short Stumble). I corrected, passing the big house and dropping down across the road to the trail and into the field. Attacking from where the trail exited the field, I saw Eddie and others heading my way, not very far ahead. A line of people going the other way helped me get there.
2. I chased after Dave Onkst who was still visible. Again attacking from the field edge where the trail goes in the woods, I passed Peggy going the other way and followed Dave in to punch.
3. +00:45I passed Dave somewhere quickly and caught sight of Tim Good. I was confused when we merged onto a trail curving in our way from above, at first reasoning that it was the trail ahead, more near the control. After crossing some more trails, I thought it was more to the right but followed Tim to the next trail--we turned around and hit it quickly after that.
4. +00:35I jumped out ahead of Tim, cutting right of the line to be sure and hit the control w/o passing it. Instead of using the trail, I crossed it and contoured across until the curve of the ridge was right. I was 2-3 contours too high but saw it and got there with Tim and others close behind.
5. +01:00Up over the ridge with Tim close behind, I started right of the line to ease the climb. Going down, I crossed a shelf-like feature and kept straight. Eventually, I saw others on the trail down the hill and knew I'd gone far enough. I contoured west and used the distinct tree to ID the reentrant. Tim fell in behind, not having made as big a error.
6. +00:05Running straight, I crossed the top of one reentrant and started to cross the next when Tim pointed out the control below. I had thought the reentrant much too broad and didn't look carefully enough at it. Thanks Tim!
7. Going straight I slowed in the green and Tim flanked me on the left. Slowing even more, he passed me and lead me to the control. Thanks again Tim!
8. +00:30My rush to get ready and to the start didn't allow for my usual routine--I couldn't tape my shoelaces nor tuck them. This then was the first of many stops to tie-up. Tim thus got ahead but leaving, I took a more direct route and got ahead of Tim on the trail. Dave was in close pursuit. Attacking from the concrete hut near the trail, I climbed up the steep hill reaching out and touching the ground in front of me. I read the rocks into control F reinforced by Dave Onkst' shout from below.
9. E was the next stop, short and straight.
10. Rather than drop altitude, I went to C next, partly thinking that the trail near D made a good exit. Tim followed but Dave had clearly gone the other way.
11. An easy jog down let me hit D thus spiking all the controls in this window.
12. Climbing up, I saw Dave Onkst tuck-in behind me. I then passed a Russian woman whom I would see on the cours again later. I attacked from the trail bend, having run most of the trail, but walking-in the last part uphill in the Blueberry to the depression.
13. +11:00This leg was similar to the one on the Red course in the springtime A-meet. I messed it up a little then but a lot this time. I checked my progress across the trail and to just below the stony ground. I cut left a bit so that I would know to be above the spur trail intersections. Reaching the trail, I never saw the intersection. With another guy in close pursuit, I cut right on the trail and paused at a small rise in the otherwise downhill trail. I couldn't determine where the rise was on the map. Rather than waist more time, I made a presumption that I was lower on the trail while actuall I was higher. My angle to attack thus was wrong. I crossed just below a spur-like feature and this lead me to think I was nearly there. I was actually uphill of the control. The hill did't change much in angle because I was too high. I soon saw Ted Good walking. After passing him and pausing to read my map, Ted asked me which control I was on and tipped-me off that I was actually half-way to #14. I turned around, wandered a bit, tied my shoes, then passed the guy who was following me but this time was going the other way. I found it just after that.
