Race Evaluation

Hudson Highlander: Highlander

ken

1. Usual plan is to just go with the posse until I get into the map. near Wyatt, Jon, Neil. hit a bit of green in the middle.
2.
3.
4. went through the marsh but didn't follow it long enough and still got stuck trying to get out the other side. some crawling under green stuff. wyatt was ahead but got more stuck.
5.
6. Wyatt paused at 5 so it was time for me to lead. mostly straight, caught up to Jordan and Jon
7.
8. we all came into this one from the low end except Neil, who nailed it. minimal time lost
9.
10. had Gu #2. with Jordan and Neil, pulling away from Wyatt and Jon.
11. road run to map exchange, took a drink.
12. trail run, with Jordan and Neil. felt pretty strong for most of it, though Jordan was definitely stronger on the hills. The first part was all on wide roads. Neil fell behind a little until we missed the turn onto the yellow trail. or really Jordan went by, and I stopped and yelled to him to turn around. then it was narrow trail and uphill. the three of us were basically together at 12.
13. I had left a bunch of gu in a bag for this aid station, so I had one, and stuffed the rest in my pocket. two cups of gatorade. Jordan and Neil spent less time and were away down the trail. (we took the low/left route) caught up to Feet as we were coming into 13, he had swung by 17.
14. Jordan/Feet a bit ahead of Neil and I now.
15. mostly trails around to 15. I was ahead of Neil but went slightly too far. I had seen jordan/feet on their way out.
16. this one seemed weird, I thought I went straight, but ended up to the left. Neil did better.
17. Neil took off SE, I took a few steps N and then reconsidered, following him. managed to find a good way through to the trail and we were together again.
18. basically straight, going left of the green in the middle. had gu #4 while power walking up the hill. realized I probably had too many in my pocket and offered one to Neil but he was not interested.
19. Neil stayed high going to 19 but I found a good way down and got there first.
20. Neil was slow coming out of 19 and after a bit of hesistation I took off ahead. I did not see him again. found a decent way through the camp and power lines and green to the control.
21. trail/road. just guessed at the attack but nailed it.
22. to map exchange, 8 mins behind they say (was more like 7). wow, more than expected. I expect to run the rest of the course alone. up the road/trail and past the hunter stand, but still messed this one up a bit.
23. back past 20 and the exact same path through the power line. through the camp on the big road and then a few random trails that I wasn't really reading. across the stream on the little trail/bridge. followed the hill worrying this would be vague but turned out fine after identifying some diagonal reentrants. another gu, #5
24. losing motivation/urgency, some walking on the approach to 24. my back and/or stomach has been getting slightly crampy. seems to make it hard to push the downhills.
25. to trail, then to road just N of power line. followed road around the rocky stuff. found the wrong boulder first, though it seemed like there was yellow adjacent. saw the flag quickly enough though.
26. mostly straight, climbed a bit rather than staying low and doing more side-hill, which was beginning to rub the bottoms of my feet the wrong way.
27. to trail/road then up over the white part of the hill.
28. mostly straight, walked up reentrant.
29. mostly straight again, not going real fast, could see from a ways off, which was nice since the area was a little confusing.
30. to power line, to road, through field.
F. angled up slightly to road, still feeling slightly cramped, no real hurry.
