Race Evaluation

West Point Day 1: Red Y

dness

1. Not a confidence builder! I had forgot the course setter's notes and didn't notice the skewed N-S lines until I was halfway to the control. This caused me to go a little high. Then there were all these unmapped significant rock features. At one point I looked down and saw a flat area, and I guessed it was the one beyond the control. Yup.
2. Contoured around by the ruin (which I couldn't see on the map until after the race). Climbed up the reentrant and glanced to the left. There it was.
3. Followed the road from the T then cut in before the cliffs -- found a trail that went in my direction. When I got to the area I thought I was N so I veered left + overshot. D'oh - it was right by the trail.
4. I was on the way, when I found myself at the base of a 13m cliff with people appearing from it. Drat! I climbed it. Wrong control cliff. Down to the reentrant and up.
5. S, then E
6. First plan: Go NE then cut back around after the cliffs. Nah -- Let's try going straight up. So I headed E, and found myself on a side hill, confusing the heck out of me for quite a while before I worked it out (Damn skew map). But the route wasn't really that bad except I was slow because of my confusion.
7. Whee!
8. Thought I was going N, actually slightly NW and ended up on the big trail, which I thought was the road. I ran to the left for 50 m. before I worked it out. On the way, cut the corner.
9. Straight.
10. Stayed high -- too high. Hit the road and bounced back into the woods.
11. Stayed high for a while then down. Pretty much straight to the control from the water.
12. What a disaster. I contoured to what I thought was (and probably was) the big cliff, then started pace counting until I saw a flat area below me which I thought was the one just before the control. I went down, but it was clearly too low, with many unmapped big rocks. So I stopped to tie my shoe. I decided to try to relocate from the trail, but higher up. On my way I spiked the control.
13. Too low, found the big reentrant and slogged up.
14. Straight. Dangerous control location!
15. Run straight.
F. Run fast (for me...)
