Race Evaluation

UNO Camping Weekend: THE MEGA

TimGood

1. Felt that I should treat the course as a normal event including splits and punching at every control. Have a 50 split Casio and 100 split Timex so plan was to take first 5 splits by writing them on the map, use the Casio to 55. Use the Timex to 155 Copy the Casio splits to the back of the map at the water stop at 138 and use it for the last 48. Started 10:15, just after Heidi Onkst.
2. Caught Heidi and Daria but can not pull away as it takes to long to write out the splits.
3.
4.
5.
6. Splits on the watch now so I can speed up a bit.
7.
8.
9.
10. Miss the control as I go by and have to come back. Heidi, Daria pass me again as well as Pavlina.
11. Stay to low and miss this as well getting all the way to 12 and coming back. Vlad goes by. Stay close to him for about 5 legs.

20. Miss the rock and end up to low and have to climb back up. Notice I am messing up on the controls where we should take splits.

28.
29. Drink a lot of water. Still a long way to go.
30.
31.
32. Stop on the knoll instead of going to the boulder. KHall, Angelica and ? come by in a train. I will hang with them thru 55.
33. The time spent punching each control is clear as the others touch and run. I spend most of my time in the train as the caboose. The problem with touching the punch but not punching, is that it swings the punch a lot more just before I grab it. Many are wrapped on the branches as well. At least my punch card is on my arm so it can reach the high bags.
34. Somewhere in here I run into a branch with my arm. It bleeds a lot but is not painful after the first blow.
35.
36.
37.
38.
39.
40.
41. Our train overtakes Heidi and Daria and 2 others with them. Takes several controls to get by.
42.
43.
44.
45.
46. We go thru the marsh and sink in above the knees. The other group hears us and wisely goes around. Angelica bails out with blisters and the water has made them start hurting.
47.
48.
49.
50.
51.
52.
53.
54.
55. First punch card has 55 boxes and this is the last split for the casio. Change cards on the run and stay with the train.
56. Mess up the splits by apparently stoping the Timex instead of taking a split. Put a new battery in last night and the beep no longer works so I do not notice.
57. Take both watches off to switch which wrists they are on. Put them back the same as before but do not notice. When I hear the beep realize I have pressed the wrong watch. Apparently killing split 55.
58. By the time I get things straightened out. I have lost the train.
59. Do not know how long the watch was off so first split is meanlngless. Try to determine from clock time later as 331. Finally just put in approximate number to make my finish time come out about right.
60. On my own again and will be for most of the rest of the course. Start writing down each 10th split so I will be able to catch errors as I invariably miss splits.
61. Note that this control has a blue stripe. Had not noticed any others. Mark it on my punch card. Find out after the race that 56 was the first blue stripe, just when I was having watch problems.
62.
63. Switch to the map insert. Difficult to do since 60 is not on the insert and I have to count backward from 70. Inset seems to have better printing then the rest of my map.
64.

69.
70.
71.
72. Not paying attention to the descriptions until I do not see the bag. Realize this the slot and go in from the top. Afraid I will have to climb down but someone has thoughtfully pulled the punch up.
73.
74.

77.
78. Wonder how Eddie will be able to punch controls hung so high.

101. Boris goes by.
102.
103. Only one jug of water left at 102 and I have to open it. About 40s at the water stop.
104.
105. Ken and GregB go by as I leave 104. Try to stay with them for awhile.
106.
107. Cannot stay with Ken and Greg on the uphill
108.
109.
110. Miss the stone wall and have to come back from the trail. Some searching required.
111. Change to 3rd punch card while moving and get off in wrong direction. Pass the cairns and hit the stone wall beyond them.

117.
118.
119.
120. Eric Bone crosses the beaver dam just after me. At 120 he says he is doing 1 minute per control. I suspect I am more like 90 seconds or 2 minutes.
121. We both miss to the right.
122. Cannot stay with Eric and he runs away.
123.
124.
125.
126.
127.
128. Do not see the bag as I go by. Keep pushing on and spot 129. Come back and find the mapcase hanging with punch.

137.
138. Planned rest stop at 138. Sit and drink my ERG and am attacked by mosquitos. Copy the 50 splits from my Casio to the map and clear it to use for the last 50. Spend 8-9 minutes writing as fast as I can. Also drink 32oz erg and have a gel.
139. Mess up control 139 after I get on my way but am feeling better and think I will be able to finish without cramping.

149. Another screw up as I get lost in the boulders. Sergei (I think) has some trouble here as well but finds it first and gets away.

153.
154.

156.
157.
158. This must be the long leg. Lose my concentration when the control circles do not match up. Counting back from 160, I come out different then going forward from 150. Realize there are only 9, and eventally that the funny circle at 160 is because there are two controls there. Anyway I get off and go on wrong side of the water and spike 162. Go back to 158 and see the giant boulder with 160 on the way.
159. Ken and Tracy go by on the way and get away as I have to stop and punch each side of the boulder.
160. Knew there were 2 controls here but had not looked ahead enough to see 3. Of course I went to the wrong one (161) first and had to run around the boulder.
161. Because I write down each 10th split, this short leg is very slow.
162.
163.
164.
165.
166. Switch to my last punch card. Get confused which control I am at and run to 167. Have to go back to 166.

181. Parking lot is very empty and those still there are changed and look like they have been in for hours. Ted and Dave are there cheering
182. Last loop looks to be easy with many of the controls on locations I visited in the model or spints. PG says it is just like square dancing.

190. Thought the circle was on the corner of the woods so spent time poking around in there.
191. Ran right by the parked car to the woods. Oh this is the fodder rack.
192. I will try and win this leg so run hard.

F. We had talked about racing the finish split but I am to tired. Just happy to finish. Hope I am going to the finish since I lost my place on the map again.
