UNO Camping Weekend: THE MEGA

Wyatt

1. 2 hours, an excel sheet and lots of cross comparison later, I think I've got the splits right
2.
3.
4. Caught Pavlina (1-2 min?)
5.
6.
7.
8. Missed left on this longish leg :) Pavi almost catches back up.
9.
10. Pass two women here, perhaps Dasha & ?
11. Crowd at this one, talking
12.

19.
20. Think I hear someone approaching. I'd been expected Wil for some time having seen him at the start
21. Wil zooms by.
22. I lock on... rough compass, quick look at the control circle, and then compare all that with the sight of Wil was the order of business for the next, oh, 80 or so controls. Wil mentions "imagine how hard it will be to keep clean when you're tired".
23. Wil's wobbles I catch back up.
24. Wil wobbles again, and wonders aloud if he's getting tired :). My rough compass is helping me cut the corners off his route when he wobbles.
25.
26. I wonder if Wil knew I was with him for so long - the gap got as high as 20 seconds or so over the next few dozen controls, but either my extra push at the sense of urgency to keep the beacon in sight, or his occasional bobbles (5 sec. here & there) help keep me in sight.

48. Pass Vadim here (I think). He decides to keep navigating rather than join the Wil train. (Which is only me...) Jeff Saeger stuck with us the longest in 1st half. I don't remember if it was in here though...

60. 3-4 of us together here. Wil hesitates a bit & I catch up.

72. Samantha, Wil & I loop around here. I find it from the top, hang precariously off the ledge, and can't reach the punch. I ask, and Wil kindly tosses the punch up to me from below. Samantha just waits 5 seconds at the top...
73.
74.
75.
76.
77.
78. Wil was pulling away a bit, but the rough compass and look at circle fast method was working quite well, even if I didn't see much of his back.
79.
80.
81.
82.
83. Wil lost his glasses here(?) the first time - I found 'em and off we (4 of us?) went.
84. +00:30Wil & I arrive first. Walk around the hill like idiots as the other two find it and leave. Reading the wrong control description (for 91...) doesn't help. Wil finally says something to the effect that the other two went over somewhere and didn't come back, so we went there too. Oh.
85.
86.
87.
88.
89.
90. On the way up here, my shoe is too loose and Wil is getting away, but I have to stop and re-tie. I thought I saw Clem way ahead here too, apporaching the bag from the right, near the bag. Anyway, I retie, figure I've lost Wil, run up, cut back to the right, turn around, and there's Wil - having lost just enough time that my shoe-tie doesn't hurt. I don't remember now if I figured out whether I had actually seen Clem or not. It would be interesting to know, because Wil did (nearly) catch Clem ~90 controls later - were we within 60 seconds of Clem here?

99.
100. Don't recall who was driving here, but I think it was probably Wil, although I think I got to 100 & 101 first?
101.
102. Ah water. and my last (2nd) GU. Wil drinks a while so I drink a while too, then I start retying a shoe and he takes off.
103.
104.
105.
106. Got these 4 w/o seeing Wil at all, but pushing hard and 'hearing' branches breaking up ahead...
107. See Wil up ahead...
108. But can't see him after 107... lost a little time here and 109 hesitating
109.
110. Quick, but can't catch Wil
111.
112. Oh mi gosh - a boy sprawled out in the sunlight. It's Wil. Did he knock himself unconcious on tree? No wait, there's movement. Apparently he's looking for his glasses. I help for 30 seconds, but he encourages me to move on, so I do
113.
114. Ran right by this, punched 115, down up reentrant and while climbing toward 116 I realize I've missed 114. Should I go back? This is mostly for fun... but damn it, I'd always regret only getting 202... head back...
115.
116. I'd already been almost here, so this went fast. Still no Wil, as the glasses hunt took even longer than my retreat to 114.
117.
118.
119.
120. +00:43Omigosh sloppy. At the first dot knoll I thought I'd crossed the reentrant, so went N toward the marsh to recover.
121. +00:15Missed a little left. Sloppy, as I'm tired, (and there's no Wil beacon :)
122.
123.
124. +00:15Miss left
125.
126.
127.
128.
129.
130. +02:30Biggest Nav. bogey of the day. Miss this left, cut toward marsh look back and can't see how I've missed it. Go almost all the way to marsh, identifying the beaver dam, then compass pace back from there and it works. I probably passed 10-15m left of this and didn't see the wall or bag... I expect Wil may have passed me here, but I didn't hear anyone...
131.
132.
133.
134.
135.
136.
137.
138. Drink, drink, drink. No GU, but I did feel a wave of energy here - got back to 'fast' pace. As I was finishing my drinking, Wil, Jon & Nadim came in.
139. Left around marsh, knowing the Wil, Jon, Nadim pack would be hunting soon.
140.
141.
142.
143.
144.
145. Still ahead of the Wil, Jon, Nadim pack - I was running at the Wil-pace I'd learned earlier in the day and was maintaining a 30-40 second gap.
146. And then I bogeyed left, basically to the hilltop somehow, then back down.
147. As I left here, I saw the line of Wil, Nadim & Jon far ahead.
148.
149. Caught Jon roughly here. I think he was punching a card (not air) so that slowed him down. Hoping that by catching him I'd see Wil or Nadim (who were ahead) but they weren't in sight.
150. Zoooom to try to catch Wil. Missed left a bit, circled back.
151.
152.
153.
154.
155.
156.
157. Pushed hard through here, and apparently was only about 1 minute behind Wil still, but the burst of energy from the 138 water stop began to hit.
158. A shocking change of pace. Several minutes where I could only use features, and no Orange flags, to reconfirm my location. Surprisingly disruptive to 'flow' :)
159.
160.
161. Cute
162.
163.
164.
165. Kinda tired and low in here - not making many mistakes, but hestating more.
166.
167.
168.
169.
170.
171.
172.
173.
174.
175. I recall this area from the Sprint, and the radio is pretty cool. Passed Sandy near here.
176. I think this was misplaced about 30m E along the road. Found it fine because I could see it from afar, but
177. +02:00on crossing the road I was right by some rocks and what looked like a hill. And the stone-wall-knoll from the Sprint seemed way off to the right. But I was too fatigued to pull off my (too due S) bearing until I hit the road SE of the rocks. Then I attack back in and it works.
178. Pass Sandy F. again, around left on road.
179. Nailed.
180. +00:05A bit far R/L
181. Eat a fig newton, drink. Notice lots of ants in the fig newton box I'd just eaten out of. So I just grab another newton from the other box. Really wasted at this point.
182. Very cool to punch at the swing my kids were swinging on.
183.
184. straight up.
185. +00:05I little zig on the wrong trail
186.
187. Oh man this forest running is hard.
188. +00:05Missed a little, then saw it hiding behind the rock.
189. Ding.
190. Zoom... well, no. More of a slight change in the fatigue of my legs as they just aren't running well, even on a road.
191. I'd heard about this.
192. Wow this is a lot of pavement (or so my legs say)
193. Hmm, even downhill in the forest isn't much better. I think my legs are sucking.
194. Nice anthill.
195. Would probably have taken water if this was on a drinking fountain.
196.
197. White course had gone through here with kids on day before.
198.
199. Ow. This hill is so hard.
200. Time for a bearing, run past the other-course bag w/o the slightest hesitation and look behind the right rock. Nice.
201. Punch
202. Same as a Sprint.
203. Oh man, here I'm thinking I can have a nice clean run in even if my legs don't want to help much, and I loop all the way around the green to the left.
F. Think about sprinting this in, but in the state my legs are in, that can probably do damage...
