Race Evaluation

HH Regional Event @ Burnham Beeches: M21L

IanW

1. Bit off line out of the start, hit small depression almost due north, didn't cost much time
2.
3. Confused parallel features
Bad distance judgement
Hesitated
+00:20
Went up broad spur, perhaps one across from where I thought I'd gone up - so it took a while for the control to appear and wasn't going very fast. A bit vague in this area.
4.
5.
6. A tiny bit too high, had to drop into control. Might have been better to exit 5 straight to field rather than going round top of large depression, which was full of felled trees/brashings.
7.
8. +00:15Wrong direction out of control, and a bit rubbish underfoot...
9.

12.
13. No attack point
Bad route choice
Bad compass work
Confused parallel features
+03:00
Long route choice leg, had plan but it didn't work. Got caught up in holly in one of the valleys, pushed me off line a bit. Then messed up the approach - very confused by size/locations of paths and the green - went too far and hit big parallel reentrant to the west. Took a bit too long to realise what had happened...
14. No attack point
+00:20
Missed right, saw the hide next to it and straight in. No obvious attack point to speak of, unless you took a more cautious approach route
15. Bad route choice
Did not plan ahead
+01:00
Wrong direction out of control, adding extra climb and distance. Then tried to cut the corner too early and got caught up in some fallen tree trunks. Time lost judged off AH's split
16. Finally nailed one, bit slow along the bottom so I got the right point to go up
17.
18. Bit hesitant but it was where I thought it would be
19. +01:30Again terrible route choice, knocked off line several times and even doubled back on myself. Kept on changing my mind how I'd do the leg all the way along it - good job by the planner!! Hit it cleanly at the end but was terrible getting there. Can see a fairly obvious route now... which I had been considering parts of - sometimes you need to go with your gut instinct.
20.
21. Ran too fast
Bad compass work
Lacked concentration
+03:00
Perhaps the most costly, dragged by the green again, hit an earthbank but started looking too early (before the path). Then thought I was on a parallel earthbank wasting even more time. Shame as route could have worked even better than I thought otherwise
22. Slightly too low, saw the control before I overshot it though
23.
24. Bad route choice
Did not plan ahead
Tired
Not thinking clearly
+01:15
Snicked eye on a holly leaf (still feels wrong), had to go around another clump, went through #26 en route but lost direction and hit path. Tiredness kicking in, trying to go straight when it was best not to.
25.
26. Bad route choice
Did not plan ahead
Tired
Not thinking clearly
+00:30
As always, almost missed it on the way back. Again missed the obvious route choice, was running through rubbish and direction was bad. Added extra climb too...
27.
28. slightly off line but nowhere near as bad as 24 and 26
29. Left calf started to cramp up, had to stop to stretch it out
F. Couldn't nail the run-in...calf wouldn't let me
