WCOC Five Ponds meet: Red

PBricker

1. +00:30Took trail to the left, but instead of being safe and attacking from the bend, I decided attack sooner and angle to it. Except that I left the trail way too early and had to run up along the marsh.
2. +02:30Misread the map and thought the cliffs were on the east side of the ridge, so I went right by it, did some headscratching, had an aha! moment (so that's why clue says lower cliff but it looks like "upper" cliff is circled), and went right to it.
3. Saw Peter .punching his second time through
4. +00:20Didn't put the "location" clue on my punch card, so when I got to ruin I hopped inside and saw that the flag could be hiding at the other end around a corner. Nope. Then came back to find it off outside the opposite corner. Stupid.
5. Easy.
6. Easy.
7. Came in higher up the spur and had to climb down the rocks.
8. East to trail.
9. Straight.
10. +01:00Climbed up the neighboring knoll to the north. Made sure it wasn't hiding. Then, looked at map and thought: I must be here, it's to my right. I turned my head and it was in plain view.
11. Exited straight south, then trails to the right of both ponds. Caught up in some prickles leaving the trail.
12. +03:00This was embarassing but, for the sake of full disclosure ... Plan was to take the trail NE, then bushwhack the 100 meters to the trail going south, run that a ways, then cut over north of Beaver Pond where it's white. But somehow I never did the bushwhack part (Did I think I had been beamed Star Trek style?) and headed SW on trail (thinking I was heading S), and then (after stopping to wonder where I was), had to bushwhack about 300 meters to get to the NW tip of Beaver Pond. I executed the route OK from there, but I kept getting stuck in lots of thick stuff. And I wasted a minute or two finding a place I could cross the stream without swimming. Lost about 3:00 for the trail error, maybe 3-4 more for the bad route choice.
13. Nailed it.
14. Straight
15. Straight, nice running.
16. Along south side of stream.
17. West to the trail. A bit of hesitation as I neared the circle.
F. Straight. It was thicker than mapped: should have gone north back to the small trail.

Total Time Lost - 00:07:20
