Race Evaluation

Flying Pig X (OCIN): Red8pt-AB

mindsweeper

1. Hey, that's the same control as #9 on the sprint!
2. Time to adjust the tempo a bit.
3. +00:05Hesitated slightly going onto the path.
4. Didn't see the option of going through the start, so I was running down towards the big reentrant and it was too late to turn back. I didn't actually notice the path down in the valley, and crossed the river at the 'S' bend. Then ran up the smaller valley to the right and up on the other side on the second spur. Down again on the other side and followed the bottom until the correct spur was ripe for climbing. Probably lost a bit of time on wrong route choice and not seeing the path.
5. Pretty much straight. Green wasn't too bad.
6. Again, green was pretty wussy.
7. I had BB, so my control #7 was 171 in the erosion gully junction NNE of the large number of manmade objects. I immediately ran down to the bottom of the valley, and up to the path on the other side. Followed the path until the major junction, and N down. Then up the spur to the NW and across the flat, forested area. Split was 8:55.
8. Control 172 at the top of the reentrant just NE of #7. Through the green, swung a bit to the left. Split was 1:27.
9. Stayed on the ridge until the path. Followed the path for a short while, but left it to stay high since the green was not bad and I wanted to avoid climbing across the various gullies and ditches. Split was 3:03.
10. Across through the saddle.
11. +00:20At this point I was starting to lose concentration. I started climbing too high on the spur to the S of the control, and ended up running down into it. It was on this and the next control that Maricel caught up to me.
12. +00:20Went too straight and got caught by reentrants bigger than I had expected. Should have stayed high/left to avoid that.
13. On road.
14. +00:15Chased by Maricel and got distracted. Hesitated a bit in the first reentrant (on the wrong side of the spur!).
15. Maricel went for the green, which (since it was actually dark this time) I avoided by running down the reentrant instead. Maricel must have had some problems with the green, because he eventually joined up with me. I didn't really find the fence, so I kept running until I saw the tiny inlet on the right, then we both cut over into the control.
16. Maricel was a bit faster than me, and kept to the left side of the winding stream bed. I stayed on the right side since it was curving. It was a lot of small climbs. Once we were getting closer, Maricel hesitated and I caught up. He had been pretty high on the left side, and tried to be wiser by staying low into the erosion gully. However, I found a faster path now by climbing over the slight spur, and punched a second or two ahead.
17. +00:05Here came the decising leg, and my decision was the wrong one. Maricel climbed up on the left spur, whereas I tried to go straight. It was too steep, and I was sliding. I had a slight advantage of running briefly on the path, but Maricel had already gained too much. (He beat me by 6 seconds on this leg.)
F. A repeat of the Chase in Colorado, Maricel had too much of a lead, and he's not a bad dasher. I managed to squeeze a single second out of him, but he still beat me by a couple.
