Race Evaluation

US Short Course Champs - Red: Red

jjcote

1. This pretty awful run (attributed to rustiness) started with my taking a step or two in the direction of the woods until I was halted by the start crew yelling, "Streamers! Follow the streamers!". (I was starting 10 minutes before the normal start window, so there were no other runners around.)
2. Looks easy, just stay on the spur to the cliff on the left side. Hmm, no cliff. A closer look reveals that it's actually a little piece of trail and a black X. Hmm, don't see any junk, either. Cluesheet reveals that it's a rootstock (brown X, not black). Okay, I did see one of them recently. Turn around and go back a short distance.
3. Straight at it, using the picnic area off to the left as a guide. Encountered ain unmapped clearing on a spur halfway there that confused me a little, and thought the thicket in the reentrant was a yellow clearing. Kept going, hesitantly, and found the control where I expected.
4. Straight, handrailing the stream.
5.
6. Saw the boulder, knew I had to be in the right reentrant, but hadn't read map closely enough to realize how high up it was, and was slightly nervous when I didn't see the flag right away.
7. Straight.
8. South to trail, followed it to a little way past the bridge, then in. Spotted flag just off to my right on a lucky glance.
9. Trail to big boulder, then diagonally up, and spiked it. Flag was very close to cliff face, and I had to get fully in front of the cliff before I could see it, but I had confidence.
10. Purposefully ignoring the map in order to watch my footing instead through the treacherous area. Good for injury avoidance, not so good for keeping track of where you are.. Stopped short of the circle, things looked about right, dropped down a level to look up at the cliffs in case the flag was tucked in really tight, didn't see anything. Headed back up to the top as Pafi and Andy went by. Continued west with them and we overshot, had to come back to find tucked-in flag.
11. Behind Pafi and Andy, hard to read contours through the clutter, checked cliff on E edge of circle just in case before popping over spur.
12. Well behind Pafi and Andy, trail downhil, then cut the corner. They seem to be going much too far left as we get to the power line. I see the big cliff ahead and nip around the end of it, and get to the control first.
13. Okay, so I have a lead. I proceed to go too far left, and cross the reentrant above the bridge (which I never saw on the map or in the terrain).I can see that the control is on the top of a slope, and something in my brain says "top... must climb...", and I proceed to climb the cliffy hillside NW of #12. Confused by why I'm surrounded by rock, but the map shows none, I stop and realize where I really am. Down the cliffs and north until I'm at a trail bend 200m WSW of the control, and straight in from there.
14. N to trail, trails around to bend SE of control, and read contours down to the control.
15. Went the right distance past trail, hadn't hit a wall, so I spun around and spotted it directly up slope from me.
16.
