Race Evaluation

US Team Trials, Day 2: Blue

Tundra/Desert

1.
2. I misread a clearing on the way, but saw a control more to the right than I had expected, on the correct-count reentrant, and it was mine.
3. Bad distance judgement

I was shaky on the route at first, having little confidence; I took 90ยบ turns, bouncing off buildings and obvious trails. As I regained some, I overran the control a bit, looking at a small unmapped clearing a tad forward of. Then I hit the rocky ground, turned around, and nailed it.

5. Went quite straight, reasoning that if I couldn't get this one without crutches (such as aiming off, far attackpoints, trail running, etc.) and by simply reading the map, I wasn't good for the remaining 12 controls, either. Getting this one by my best reactive navigation, throwing myself into the middle of things and carefully scanning the terrain and finding the objects on the map, bought me a nice reservoir of confidence that lasted through the end of the race. I was clean from here on.

8. Sharon Crawford led me into this one, but I was going straight to it anyway.

12. I saw Steve Noller going straight to the control, but he stopped just short of it and proceeded to search the more upper part of the reentrant. Later he said he didn't hear me.

17. Jeff the Coach and walk were running to it.
