L Knee, Impact wound / trauma

2006-01-14 – 2006-01-22

Grade: 2

Fell and hit/scraped the outside of my left knee in a rocky (cobble-sized) area at Anza-Borrego Desert, going to control 4 or 5 on day 1. I apparently mashed a tendon, ligament, or other connective tissue. Early on, it seemed to become inflamed and painful with further running. I finished the course, and after being stopped for a while, the knee become so painful and stiff that even walking hurt a lot. By the next day, after some ice and a few doses of ibuprofen, I could apparently run on the knee without causing increased inflammation.

I don't think the knee has been painful during exercise (or at any other time) since the PCTR trail run on Jan. 21, so I guess the knee is better. I was fortunate that training did not seem to significantly aggravate this injury, and it healed during a pretty heavy training week. As of Jan. 25, there is still a faint lump/mound near the site of the impact, and the scab is still there. Also, when I press on it hard, it hurts a bit.
