Arctic Midnight Orienteering, 20k mass start with Matthias.
QRThis was cool, and definitely worth the trip. The terrain is a mix of bare rock, nordic mossy marshy stuff, and some residual snow fields. The majority of running was on the soft stuff. The mapping threshold for cliffs seemed pretty high, like maybe 5m+, and there were plenty of smaller ones that we had to find our way around. One of the strangest things is the total lack of scale out in the terrain. Without trees, it's pretty hard to know how far away anything is. (even harder to tell in the pictures,
here the water is almost 1km away)
Probably could have done without the midnight aspect, as it was cloudy and raining. And my usual problems with night-o stomach-upset towards the end and afterwards. Was planning to go with two short-sleeve shirts until it started raining, so switched one for long-sleve. It was probably around 40F and drizzling but without much wind. Certainly not 10Mila-snowing cold, but given the length and exposure it seemed better to be too warm. It seemed about right once we got going. Carried the gopro in a "SPI-belt" that I got so Samantha can race with her phone. That was comfortable enough but not super easy to take in and out on the run with gloves on. I took one Aleve beforehand, and my weird knee didn't really bother me. Seemed fine afterwards too.
Would love to come back at some point, with a bit more time to do all the events. But the proximity to Alex's birthday (which I was away for) is highly problematic, it is not easy to get here, and there are so many other places I haven't been to yet. Maybe some day.
