ahr:102 max:127 shoes: Nimbus 22

A shorter hike back to the car. Trailhead parking was overflowing, good we were getting out of there. Lower hamstring soreness made driving interesting, but that seems to be the only damage from the trip...no back problems.

From Lion's Head up a gradual climb through mostly evergreen forest (Samantha loves pine trees), to the corner of Timberline, and then up and around the west/northern ridge trails with cool rocks and overlooks into the valley. A bit more busy with day-hikers and other backpackers out today, but somehow we still got our first-choice campsite. Closer to water this time, and great views of the sunset, comet, stars, and sunrise.

It was sunnier than I expected, and I ended up with some sunburn on my neck and upper arms. Different socks today, no new blisters. Samantha said the hiking seemed like it went by quickly (or not as bad as she thought), though her feet were hurting by the end.

Backpacking in Dolly Sods with Samantha. My pack was a bit lighter than last time at 51lbs, I think mainly because I gave her the dinner food bag. Hers was 27lbs, including a hardcover book that did not get opened.

We parked near the Red Creek campground and hiked down towards Lion's Head. We took the scramble option up the south end which was definitely a bit of a stretch with full packs, I think maybe because we missed the best route. A few places we had to take packs off and pass them up/down.

After setting up camp we hiked a bit farther to get water, while a thunderstorm rolled through. Only a little wet, not enough to get clean. And then we saw a snake that the internets now tell me is generally docile and rarely attempts to bite.

Samantha and I went to Redgate park and I surprised her with Peggy's new map. We did the short-shorts course with printed maps and the UsynligO app on our phones in little running belts, which mostly worked except we both had to take our phones out and unlock them at different points to get them to register. I think my problem was that I had only allowed GPS when the app was open, maybe hers too. I gave her a head start but caught up when her phone was spaced out. But it was fun and she really enjoyed it.

with Eliza. Trying to be gentle on her calves, so we have a loop where we can walk one uphill section and run the rest flat/down. Seems to help.
