Running 33:00 [3] 3.3 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

Running around on trails and a bit in the forest with Boris. Wore sneakers - knees felt somewhat sore (in a dull way) the whole time and achilles hurt in the beginning. I'm beginning to think it's the sneakers...

Running 28:36 [3] 2.64 mi (10:50 / mi)
shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

Running around on trails and in the forest at West Rock with Boris. Kneecaps felt like they were being pulled at first, then got better. Heel hurt. :(

Note

Lots of walking around NYC both yesterday and today. Really tired by the end.

Wall Climbing 45:00 [1]

First time climbing outdoors, at Ragged with Triet. It takes a really long time to set up the ropes, and since we were the only two people there we couldn't share ropes with other people so we only climbed 5 routes each, but the routes were longer than the ones in the gym (probably about 60 feet?). I climbed two 5.7's, two 5.9's, and most of a 5.10, better than I thought. The climbing was very different from indoors, most of the routes had long sections of crack climbing, which I've never done before. I managed, but it required new skills. The whole trip took about eight hours and I came home absolutely exhausted (not just from the climbing but also hiking up and down the steep rocky trail to set the ropes). It was beautiful out there, and I saw multiple birds of prey flying just above the cliffs!

Note

Got my result today! I passed my algebra qualifying exam with honors, so now I can spend the rest of my summer relaxing and feeling that I've done enough work to deserve the next three months break. :)

Orienteering 40:00 [3] 3.5 km (11:26 / km)
shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

Training at Osbornedale - 3+ km course, many (18) controls. Wet, dim forest (went out around 6:20 PM and it was overcast), hard to read the map. Didn't have much flow, but navigated reasonably well for most of it. Knee didn't bother me during the run (it's always better in the forest), and heel only felt slightly sore. Yay!

Wall Climbing 45:00 [1]

2 x orange 5.7
2x red 5.8
red 5.7+ not very elegant, but did it
white unrated (maybe 5.7+)
pink 5.8+ (incline)
yellow 5.9 (flat wall)
(some climbing around on the walls)
green 5.10 - *almost* made it. No real falls, but one lean on the rope
black 5.9+ (corner) - I almost onsighted this! Only one break.
purple 5.10 C/D (incline room) - did first 1/3 of it with some breaks. tough!
black 5.9 in main room - felt tired
blue unrated

Right elbow and fingers (especially middle finger) felt sore by the end. Tough night, but very fun!

Orienteering 21:45 [3] 2.5 km (8:42 / km)
shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

The Canadians called Boris in the morning, right as I was thinking about getting out of bed, so we decided to join them for their training session. I did a short course (9 controls in the tricky area), part-way with Carol. Physically, felt much better than on Saturday, but then again I was only out in the woods for about 20 minutes...Distance here is the straight-line distance, but we didn't veer too far away from the line.

Running 3:00 [3] 0.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

Running to/from.

Wall Climbing 45:00 [1]

2x yellow 5.7
2x orange 5.7
new blue (maybe 5.8+ or 5.9) - done on first try
white unrated (5.7+ maybe?)
yellow 5.8 (back room, incline)
2xslab
blue 5.10- (fell again, legs didn't feel stretched out enough)
black 5.9+ (fell a couple of times, need to work out the ending)
2xred 5.8
white 5.9 (fell a few times, then decided I was too tired at the top)
some fun attempt at the beginning of a 5.12
red 5.7 (incline in big room)
yellow 5.7 (incline in big room)
green 5.10 (fell just once, I need to do the last move dynamically
blue 5.8 (vertical)
TOTAL: 16 (not including 2 slab runs)

Note

Was totally wasted yesterday and this morning - exhausted after my long exam on Friday and then waking up early and being busy all day Saturday. Tried to go to sleep around 9, but I always have a hard time falling asleep without Boris, so actual sleep came later.

Orienteering 49:00 [4]

Pre-ran the red X (women's) course at Ansonia. It turns out I still know how to orienteer....for the most part. I've lost my sense of distance and climb judgment (as was witnessed by my one big time loss in the middle of the course), and I'm also incredibly out of shape. Did a lot of walking after 14 minutes out there...It was fun to be in the forest again, but afterwards my heel hurt so I don't think there will be a comeback anytime soon.

Note

I'm finally done with the semester! Had my algebra qualifying exam today, and I think it went well, so now I'm free until September. :)

Running 20:09 [3] 3.54 km (5:42 / km)
shoes: Asics Cumulus 2009

Beautiful run with Boris at East Rock. Saw a swan, and some pretty views of the rock in the sunset. Knee felt ok during the run, but hurt afterwards. Also, right heel and achilles hurt during the run, not on every step but enough that I was always aware of it.

Running 19:00 [3] 3.29 km (5:47 / km)
shoes: Asics Cumulus 2009

Easy run with Boris in East Rock. Really out of shape, but not as slow as I expected. Gorgeous weather. I tried taping my knee today, and that seemed to help. Feet were ok as well in sneakers, insoles, and tape. Felt tired - leg and hip muscles sore.

Wall Climbing 45:00 [1]

2x purple 5.6
2x orange 5.7 (felt really good technically)
pink 5.8+
2x yellow 5.7
new white unrated (probably 5.7+)
blue 5.10- (failed again at both holds, argh)
pink unrated - only fell once this time, towards the end when hands sweaty
blue 5.10- got past the first crux (first time!), but then hands tired on the second. *So* close
black 5.9+ (couple of falls, need to work out the moves)
orange 5.9+ two slips - still some awkward sections
green 5.10 - got past the dish all the way to the small crimpy handholds, and actually managed to hold on to them! Awesome, I've developed finger strength. Still not enough to haul myself around by my fingers, but it's a start. I bet I could do this route with some practice.

Running 29:26 [2] 4.35 km (6:46 / km)
ahr:134 max:157 shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

Slow run with Boris in West Rock. I wore my HR monitor, and found that my HR was actually not that high. Sure, we weren't moving very fast, but it's still a lot better than I would have expected given that there are some gradual hills, some rocky sections where we walked, warm weather, and I haven't run in a while. Various things hurt - left knee started up right away and got worse, right knee also felt sore by the end, right heel occasionally had some dull pain in it, and both achilles kind of hurt. :( On the bright side, it was a sunny day and Boris was very nice to me. I've definitely got the world's best man.

Wall Climbing 1:00:00 [1]

Climbing at CT Rock gym with Boris. I went there for variety (different routes). They've got some nice wall space for practicing turns and flags, but the routes just aren't as well thought-out as at Prime Climb (at least the easier ones, 5.6 - 5.8).

Note

I love REI. They just had their annual "garage sale" (where old/used/display items can be sold at big discounts) and this together with a 25% off coupon plus my REI dividend meant that I got $290 worth of stuff for $50. :)
