Biking 2:00:00 [4] 24.0 mi (5:00 / mi)
This morning I went for a ride with some Yale cycling team members. We did the orchard loop, which has a few hills in it. There were five of them in total, and they were all really nice and welcoming. And much faster than me. I had to work hard to try and keep up (even though I'm sure they were going at an easy pace), and a few times they slowed down for me. About half-way through the ride, I was already dying, but the last three miles were a crawl. I completely bonked, and I could feel this weakness in my shoulders and arms, as if it was hard just to hold onto the bike. I also was having difficulty focusing, and I felt completely empty. When I got to Canner hill (a steep, longish hill close to home), I walked the bike up. I would walk a few steps, then stop and wait for the dizziness to pass, then walk a few more. Painful, especially since road bike shoes aren't meant for walking (they have a part jutting out from the bottom). When I got home, I felt totally out of it, and I weighed 99.6 lbs!! Recently, my weight has been around 103 or 104, so this was a big drop. I ate a lot of food, then went to bed for an hour. Then I showered and went to tutoring. Life goes on.
The issues here were:
- I wasn't expecting to wait 20 minutes for the ride to start
- we stopped a few times, especially when I got lost and we had to regroup
- I hadn't really eaten much for dinner yesterday or breakfast today, so I was really energy deficient
- I didn't have any food or gels with me
- the ride was longer than expected
- the pace was quick
- it was hot
- I am stubborn, so I kept pushing myself the entire time
I'm definitely going to do more cycling in the future, and maybe do some races next spring. I'll just have to be more careful!
