"Recovering" with a fever and left neck muscle spasms. No running yet, no going onto the road (can't turn my neck). Boring!

Trail running race 7:10:10 [3] 32.99 mi (13:02 / mi) +1872m 11:05 / mi
shoes: Topo MT3

Ragged 80M Stage 3. Not only was this the longest stage but also the hottest. Already at 8 am it felt uncomfortable in the sunny spots - luckily we were in the woods for the most parts. The first 10 miles of this stage are on roads (paved and dirt) for the most part, but with considerable gradual climbs. Unlike last year, when I did stage 3 only and totally burned out after the first half, this time I religiously kept may breathing at a low cadence (= heartbeat monitoring without a heartbeat monitor). I speed walked whenever the hills were moderately steep. Then relaxed "trotting" elsewhere.
Some more bombing down the steeper trail section with Brian. Always need to have a little fun in between. Also the adventure lady from Chicago, had urged me to engage my glutes whenever possible on the steeps ups and downs to take pressure off the legs and it seemed to work! No cramping all day! (That's a first for me on a 5hr+ run in the heat in many years!). I also had packed a bagged pickle (incl. the juice) on aid stations 2 and 3 and slowly nibbled on them just before the Bog Mt climb and then before the Ragged climb. That might have helped too. And the breakfast sandwich as well.

The final ascent up Ragged was pretty tough but a breeze compared to last year's struggle. I just took it slow - legs had no umph, and my balance was limited, but I made it to the top! I was pretty much at 4th place for a long time, with Brian about 3 minutes behind. He caught me on the last sections of Ragged (he had been doing a lot of Mt jogging - all 4000 footers twice!), also less than 1/2 my age. But then he was suffering on the downhill (legs, feet ankles), meanwhile I was excuberantly bombing down the Green slope of Ragged Ski area in about 8 minutes, leaving Brian behind by 3 minutes and finishing a solid 4th, within less than 10 minutes behind #2 I believe.

Will be interesting to see the final total for the 3 stages.
Lots of cheering and good conversation following for several hours. I lost my appetite in the heat and did not gain it back until the next morning. But the free beer and a juicy salad tasted fabulously nevertheless.

P.S. Yes 4th overall this year and 7th overall in the three years when the race was held. Very pleased with that. Or as I should say: Extremely happy that I am still capable of chasing around with the youngsters.
