Orienteering 1:09:07 [4] **** 7.3 km (9:28 / km) +200m 8:20 / km
spiked:10/19c shoes: VJ Falcon

Brinkmanship by the organising team in the light of weather forecasts promising dire snowy conditions. Final confirmation that it was taking place at 07:45 on the morning of the event.

Set off with trepidation (and shovel, mats, blankets, extra food etc.).
Journey there not too bad, though return was unpleasant on the A25 and didn't get straight forward until we reached the motorway.

A very memorable event for all the right reasons - beautiful forest conditions and tricky navigation (paths and tracks of all sizes difficult to determine).
Heard someone describing it as running through Narnia - very apt description.

Unfortunately tag course was cancelled, so spent over an hour entertaining children with the sledge before returning to the car.

Navigation and physical conditions taxing so A took longer on the first split than we would've liked - made getting to the start before everything finished quite tricky. Missed the 12:15 last start for championship run by one minute - will have to see how tightly that rule is being applied - seems unfair if I get penalised in view of the difficult conditions.

Update: Medal result published and I got a silver! The leader was a new name to me (off my radar): appears to be a first year M45 who moved up this year - good result by him (9 mins faster than me!!!) and a name to watch during 2013.

Note
(rest day)

SO Rewell Event cancelled due to snow.
In the park with the sledge 09:30-10:00.
Only people there when we arrived.
Plenty of activity by the time we left (11:30) - around 60 people playing in the snow.

Cycling 10:00 [3] 1.6 mi (6:15 / mi)
(rest day) shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Home -> Work
Dressed for the anticipated weather (but not arrived yet).
Temp slightly milder than of late (around freezing point).

NB Snow started at about 08:30 so ideal timing for this mornings commute!
12 PM

Note

Well, the snow has definitely arrived. Been snowing lightly, but steadily, since about 08:30 now probably about an inch of the stuff on the ground.
Due to continue like this until the early hours of Saturday.

O tomorrow (Rewell SOG) now been called off, so a day playing with the snow (until the children get too cold!) instead.

Still waiting for news of the DFOK event. None yet, so assuming that there's been no cause to cancel just yet. Be unlucky if they do have to cancel/postpone - would be second time in two years for one of their bigger events.

Running 39:54 [4] 7.5 km (5:19 / km)
shoes: Saucony Trigon 5

Thursday Run.
Time measured. Distance estimated.
Dressed for the cold (incl gloves, but no hat) and then generally bathed in sunshine! Cold in the shadows, prob still about -1C. Not much ice, but ground very hard in most places.
Starting was hard, but later found the steady pace ok.
BR crossing barriers down, so contuinued to footbridge near station and then through town centre. NB HR crossing still closed to road traffic travelling N.
Looks, by the weather forecast that this could be the calm before the storm: snow forecast for Friday and over the weekend.
O on Saturday, and possibly Sunday will be subject to ease of travel.

Cycling 8:00 [3] 1.4 mi (5:43 / mi)
shoes: Diadora

Home -> Pool
Cold out (est -3C). No significant ice yet.
House thermometer was showning +3.4C for the outside temp - may need to look at batteries as definitely below freezing outside!

Swimming 39:57 [5] 2.0 km (19:59 / km)

Breakthrough!
Started off well with four good lengths already pulling well ahead of evens time. Then settled onto a slightly sub 60s/length pace for next 20 lenths or so before a noticeable (but not huge) reduction in pace to around 61s/length.
Very pleased to have broken the 40 min barrier for the first time for quite a while. A couple of very fast people in the same lane (40s/length pace?) early on in the session.
8 AM

Cycling 14:00 [3] 3.0 mi (4:40 / mi)
shoes: Diadora

Pool -> Work
Very long stop at library traffic lights.
Still very cold. Noticeably more frost at north end of town (possibly due to earlier freezing fog?).

Chilly again, though initially didn't seem quite as cold as Monday morning. Windchill more apparent once I got moving - glad of the thick cycling top.
Went to wrong crossing on autopilot - had to U-turn and go to the BR crossing.
