Balmoral Burn, Awaba Street, Balmoral (7am-12.30pm). 16-20°C. Great breakfast in the marquee beside the bay. Conscripted by Richard (starter) and Laurie (finish line) to help out this year. Possibly a job interview for a long-term appointment. Main task was to record the top-3s in each race and sub-category in case the timing chips gave anomalous results. Pretty straightforward until the last race, the corporate relay, when the bottom-of-the-hill team released 2 runners from the same team together. This meant the the second team across the line was not really second as I could show their first three runners were well back in the field for the first three legs.

However, the personal highlight was Bethany backing up her win in the elite women's race from last year to score another victory and equal the course record. She covered the 420m (+70 climb) in 1'36", beating two AUS representatives and all but 12 of the men in the process. Another $3000 payday also soothed the aching calves somewhat. She held back on the first half of the hill when 2017 World Champs 800m rep Lora Storey went out quickly, but Bethany dominated the second half of the race to cover any moves from 2016 Rio Olympic 400m relay rep Jess Thornton to win by one second.
