Australian Athletics Championships, Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. Day 1/8. 12.30-8.40pm. 20-12°C.
Good to catch up with interstate friends again after the 2020 AAC was cancelled. New uniforms from Puma to replace the BLK ones from 2018. Freezing tonight even with four layers on: long-sleeved top, short-sleeved polo, polar-fleece top, rain jacket.
Events on duty today: 16 x 100m (finish line judge), 22 x 400m, 12 x 1500m. No reports from me although the other team had a DQ in a 400 and a YC in a 1500. Freezing for the night session even with no wind - I had 4 layers on.

Toughest map I've run for a long, long time. No respite from dense bush, steep terrain, fallen trees & rocks. Too long? Once again, not too bad to #6, then I lost concentration from #7 on.
#1 - Short & straight. #2 - Used small hilltop as AP. #3 - Ventured down to the cleared area on the fence line for a faster run and came back up from the large bare rock. Drifted a little left and high (-2:40). #4 - Down to another fence then up the gully. #5 - Straight. #6 - Followed the ridge. #7 - Drifted right and decided to relocate from a vehicle track (-11'). #8 - Followed the ridges. Very slow and tired by this stage. [Pressed 'stop' instead of 'lap' on Garmin at #8. Pressed 'start' and 'lap' about 5' later on way to #9.] #9 - Terrain too steep. Gullies not obvious. No idea where I was going. Luckily I ended up just right and below CP (-1.40). #10 - Wrong bare rock, started looking too soon (-2:40). #11 - Drifted way too far left. Had to relocate from #12. Tempted to DNF except I was so close to the end (-13:30). #12- OK. #F - OK. Total est time lost: 31:00.

Another map with granite boulders everywhere. Very steep as well. Relatively happy with my start but it all went awry after a bad exit from #4 (12th/21).
#1 - Slow to get around a knoll that was between the S-triangle and #1 (-1:30). #2 - Traversing down. #3 - Over the top and down a long gully. #4 - OK. #5 - Not trusting compass (-5:30). #6 - Drifted left to wrong high point (-10:30). #7 - OK. #8 - Didn't go far enough to boulder cluster (-3:15). #9 - OK. #10 - Good route across the top of the hill but misread stand code and went away for 5'. #11-12 OK. #13 - Too far (-6'). #14-15-F OK. Total est time lost: 31:45.
Best legs: #F (6th); #2 (7th); #3 (8th). Best pos: 12th/21 (#3-4).

Note
slept:5.9 weight:65kg (sick) (rest day)

Couldn't stop sweating in bed last night after my first COVID vax. Feeling lethargic today. There's also rain about so I'm having a rest day or two.

Bethany has been having bad headaches on and off since she had her COVID vax a couple of weeks ago. She spent 8 hours at Hornsby Hospital last night (7pm-3am) for blood tests and CT scans. No blood clots found, so at least it's nothing serious.
