VCL "B" Race.
Haven't raced for 8 weeks....felt hard tonight....even the ride out to Latoria.
I figured I'd race conservatively and stay with the pack...there was only two others from my club there, so we couldn't really lay on some team tactics, but I chased down breaks for the team and helped Lionel with a break away when he bridged to R; I'd go to the front to control the pack and gradually slow the pace, then cover the attack when the pack realized I was letting the two person break get away...this worked for quite a few laps before the pack caught on...but only after I gave it away that my team mate was in the break away.
The pack was stretched out with 2.5 laps to go and I was in a group of 10 -12. We had managed to break apart the peloton and the two person break away was absorbed. There was no chance the peloton was was going to catch us as the pace was high and we were working together, however we were neutralized when we caught up to the A group and had to slow down as we were going to be getting the bell lap (race rules dictate that you can't join another group, or the group being overtaken has to neutralize to allow the faster pack to pass); this was going to lead to a chaotic bell lap/sprint finish with the combined B/A groups...so the RD called for an extra lap for the B's and we had to let the A's go off; we had cut our pace considerably which allowed the entire B group to rejoin us...so it became a sprinters tactical exercise with no one wanting to lead out the pack until some one committed to an attack. I played around with the pack jumping off a few times when we were about 800m from the finish...Lionel was lurking on and off my wheel knowing what I was doing and knowing I would lead him out. He sprinted for third and I think I got 10th....uphill finish and my legs were dead.
