Orienteering race 1:56:27 [4] **** 7.0 km (16:38 / km) +450m 12:35 / km
shoes: Innovate 280

Wow, was this a long course! My only problem was that I was just slow. I started out pretty slow, and through the entire course I kept hesitating and loitering in the woods. Part of it was having to jog/walk up those hills, which made me feel like I was taking forever, but part of it was also mental slowness. I think I was not doing enough reading ahead, and I was unable to anticipate some of the route choices I would have to make until the very last moment when I actually had to make them. I made a few dumb mistakes just because I hadn't read ahead enough and seen what the next leg would look like. Still, it was a good experience, and I think it was pretty fun, even if it was one of the steepest courses I have ever run.

Orienteering race 31:02 [4] ** 2.7 km (11:30 / km) +70m 10:10 / km

Sprint through the IU campus. It was a gorgeous, sunny day, and the course was great, but unfortunately I made a terrible 6-minute mistake! I randomly lost my place in the middle of the course and took forever to concentrate and get re-oriented. But I don't think it was all accidental. I actually have quite a lot of trouble with sprints, because I don't do them very often (this was maybe my second or third), and I think it's obvious I need more practice with that type of snap-decision orienteering.

Other than that mistake, though, I had a lot of fun, and I felt like I was running pretty well.

Rock Climbing 35:00 [3]

Bouldered all afternoon with Rushmie and Pria! And tore up my hands in the process, ugh. Not an easy day of climbing. I did a bunch of V1s, some V2s, and tried a V3. And I did some V-intros to make myself feel better after I failed at all the harder climbs.

Strength and conditioning 15:00 [5]

Core plus stretching. I felt so weak for some reason... everything was a lot harder to do. At least I've gotten one core session over with.

Rock Climbing 40:00 [3]

Rock climbed with Rushmie and Samantha! We bouldered first, and I did 2 V1s, and then we rope climbed. I climbed a 5.8, a 5.9, and then another 5.9. I felt good about all of them, even though on the last 5.9 I couldn't hold onto the rocks very well and I had to rest twice. Still, everything felt really smooth--I think because my sequencing has improved. We finished off with some more bouldering. I did three or four V1s and attempted a V2. It was a really fun day of climbing!

Quick run after climbing. I ran up to the field, around once, and back.

Running 50:00 [3] 4.4 mi (11:22 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Ariel

Long run through the neighborhood on the last day of spring break :(

Running 41:00 [3] 3.7 mi (11:05 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Ariel

Ran around the neighborhood. I took the dogs for a walk this morning, and I didn't want to follow the same route, so I ran kind of randomly all over the place, and it ended up being pretty long.

Armchair Orienteering 25:00 [1]

I did one of Erin's armchair-O exercises today. I drew my route to each control (using an old map of Prince William Forest Park) on a clean sheet of paper, trying to draw only the features I needed to get to each control. It was pretty fun. I was surprised by how little I relied on contours to find each control, and how much I relied on trails and roads. Maybe I should be using contours more...
