Orienteering race 22:40 [4] 2.0 km (11:20 / km)
ahr:135 max:169 shoes: X-Talon 190

Short course at Garvey Park NavDash event. GPS 2.77km. A bit slow to 1, went around to the left on 2-3, and backed out to 4. Wondered if people might jump the meter or so gap between two peninsulas, not knowing that it would be the same as jumping over a strip of garden, ie illegal. Went left to 5, probably a little longer but avoiding running through the Start. Went left again to 6 and found the gap in the green to attack from. Ran directly to the bridge NW of 6, and soon found the path along the drain bank (wondered why the path was a solid line, but insprection at home shows the map to be a poor quality print that has bled out the gaps). Found 10 before 7 and attacked from there. 7-11 pretty straightforward, and went back to the bridge W of 12, then straight to 13 (green wasn't noticeable). Right from 15-16 (avoiding the Start yet again). Completely ran out of puff on this leg, having been out well over the regulation 12-15 mins. Recovered a little bit to raise slightly more than a jog from 16 to the finish. Enjoyed the course even if it was overlong.

Orienteering 26:03 [3] 2.9 km (8:59 / km)
ahr:132 max:175 shoes: X-Talon 190

Long course at Garvey Park. GPS 3.74km. Took a break of around an hour before tackling this, and ran it at a mostly easy jog, even walking a little on the very long leg 5-6. Wondered if anyone went other than right on this and the other long leg 18-19. Quite enjoyable nonetheless.

Can't put my hands on a previous Garvey map at the moment, but I'm pretty sure it had North lines - not that I needed them, but some people probably would.

Orienteering race 21:21 [4] 1.6 km (13:21 / km)
ahr:135 max:167 shoes: X-Talon 190

Short race at John Curtin College NavDash. All over the place, mistakes at 3, 5, 6, 12 and 14. 3 was a route choice error, just didn't see the left option. The first error at 5 was forgiveable, going to the passage that I remembered from last year, only to find the door locked (I wasn't the only one to do this), but the second error was to go into the wrong basketball court. 6 was route choice again, didn't see the right option avoiding all the stairs, twists and turns inside the school. 12 was a mapreading/failure to look at description error; got halfway to where I thought it was, only to realise it was outside the gate. When I eventually got there it looked like the station could have been punched through the gate - hope no-one did that. From 13 I went straight to the finish and had to go back to 14, then couldn't see it behind a large tree. I think I dfidn't look there at first because it was mapped as yellow all around, but there was only grass on one side.

At a guess, I lost 0:30 at 3, 1:30 at 5, 0:30 at 6, 1:00 at 12, and 1:00 at 14, but it feels like I lost more.

Note: looking at the splits, my time losses (relative to Liam) were 0:15 at 3, 2:00 at 5, 0:30 at 6, 1:15 at 12 and 1:00 at 14, 5 mins in total - confirms my suspicion that the course was slightly long.

Orienteering 22:34 [3] 2.3 km (9:49 / km)
ahr:137 max:166 shoes: X-Talon 190

Long race, running slowly, walking the stairs and navigating more carefully. Two small errors, route choice from 8 to 9 where I didn't see the non-wide right option, and also went in to the green too early (0:45) and 13-14 where I went down stairs into a dead end (0:30). Apparently I also must have had the map flipped over at 4, because I went from there up to 18 before going to 5.

Checking the splits I'd probably compare myself with jennycas, so time losses for the errors were 0:30 at 5, 1:00 at 9 and 0:30 at 14, so could have been 2 mins quicker.

Road cycling 2:04:00 [3] 49.65 km (2:30 / km)
ahr:108 max:157 shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Around the river, cloudy & cool, arm warmers on for first time this year. Drizzled a bit going through the city, SW winds.

Friday Apr 6, 2018 #

Road cycling 1:59:35 [3] 48.95 km (2:27 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Around the river, usual Friday group reduced to just Richard and me. SE/NE wind again. We got separated in Bicton when Jerrat Drive had a 'closed' sign and Richard decided to go around via Preston Point Rd but I took a chance on being able to get through. No go, and I had to ride across the oval. Saw Richard on Wauhop Rd, but when I reached the road I had to backtrack around a fence. Meanwhile Richard thought I was ahead of him, but I eventually found him waiting at our usual turning point at the old bridge.

Bassendean ride, but crossed over the Farmer Freeway bridge to explore the park around the new stadium. Could make a reasonable sprint map, but no photos available yet.
