Orienteering race 43:40 [4] **** 4.4 km (9:55 / km)
spiked:8/10c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330

H3 course at Kalamunda, GPS 5.08km surprised me because I took a couple of wide track options - thought it might have been more. 17secs down on Joe, lost a good half-minute going into 4 too early (gully on steep hillside - could have stayed on a track for another 50-60m), then another half-minute at the last control, where I also misread the position of the finish and raced off to where I thought it was, costing another 15-20 secs. Don't know why people dislike Kalamunda, best fun I've had on a course this year - a nice, rugged adventure race for real men and women!

Orienteering race 12:57 [5] **** 2.0 km (6:29 / km)
spiked:13/14c shoes: Inov8 X Talon 212

WA Sprint Champs at Guildford GS. GPS 2.29km. Peeing down with rain, so left the glasses in my bag. Stopped twice briefly to check the route into 1, after that all seemed to flow pretty well until 12. 2-3 I got a bit of a shock as I realised we had to cross the public road, and couldn't be sure from the map at speed that the gate SW of 3 would be open so took a gamble. Ran pretty well for the next few, but possibly took a slightly too long route to 7. Leaving 11 the map was telling me that the left route to 12 along the fence was blocked by green, but I wasn't looking at it properly so ended up with a bit of a zig-zag route, up one long flight another of stairs, and down another near the Start where I had to slow down for a couple of people just starting. OK after that, except I could have shaved a couple of seconds if I'd had glasses and could see the little gap in the garden after 13, and had read the end of the garden into the Finish better.

Good sprint course, had to be on my toes with the mapreading, but not so that I couldn't run at a fair clip.

Running 48:09 [3] 8.9 km (5:25 / km)
shoes: Asics GT 2150

Bridges & Heirisson Island - saw 4 roos quite close to the track, too dark to see if there were still a total of 6.

Running 33:43 [4] 6.65 km (5:04 / km)
shoes: Asics GT 2150

Kings Park, short lap as I was still feeling sore from Sunday. Planned on around 35, but Ed pushed too hard.

Event: Mt Billy

Orienteering race 58:06 [5] **** 6.4 km (9:05 / km)
spiked:11/13c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330

H3 course at Mt Billy, gps 7.31km. Wide on 1-2 and 6-7 to avoid green. Missed two easy controls, 12 by only a few seconds, but at 9 I veered off to the left by quite a bit in green that was mapped 8 years ago, came out 180m from the control. Thought I ran pretty well, but a minute behind Pat Walsh - interesting to see what Craig, Rach and Fletch did.

Road cycling 2:20:03 [3] 54.93 km (2:33 / km)

Same ride as a couple of weeks ago, much colder - 2C when we started. Good fruit toast at Kava again.

Running 40:15 [4] 7.93 km (5:05 / km)

Kings Park, gradually getting down - should crack the 40 in the next few weeks, and hopefully around 39 by the time we head to Tyrol 6 Days.

Orienteering race 53:09 [4] *** 5.9 km (9:01 / km)
spiked:8/11c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330

H3 course at Catholic Agricultural College (spur gully), GPS 7.2km. Bit wobbly about some of the controls, but nothing more than half a minute. Compass was adrift on 1 and went wider than I would have liked, at 2 the (now unusual) 1:15000 scale was hard to read, thought I was looking for a rocky knoll in a gully, but it turned out to be on a spur - more logical when you think about it but that's not what the map was telling my less than perfect eyes.

Orienteering race 15:13 [5] **** 2.0 km (7:37 / km)
spiked:11/14c shoes: Inov8 X Talon 212

Nav Dash sprint event at Edith Cowan University campus, Joondalup. Good course with a butterfly about half-way. Bit of hesitation on way to 1 (5sec), started to go one way then changed my mind from 3-4 (20sec), and also had to hunt when I got to 4. Ok then until 11 where my route took me to the wrong side of a wall (20sec). Wasted a bit of time turning the stations over to check the numbers. My distance 2.95km, course setter had estimated 2.7.

Friday May 7, 2010 #

Outdoor Gym 30:00 [2]

Note: planned to run today but the smoke haze over Perth was really too thick to risk it. Hopefully will be cleared by tomorrow.

Around the River the longer, hillier way through the posh suburbs (Nedlands, Dalkeith, Peppy Grove, Mosman, North Freo). Stopped for fruit toast and coffee at Kava Cafe in Bicton (recommended). Got to do more rides before France.
