Orienteering race 31:07 [4] 5.0 km (6:13 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Metro race at Leeming, Medium course. Went South from the start, then West and back through the middle of the map: 1-25-18-16-17-30-15-19-13-20-28-14-11-22-29-5-27. Went hard for the first two, was in a good sized group behind tRicky, then I tried to stay with Ameko when he came past between 16 and 18. Consequently was very tired by 14 and made a couple of mistakes; firstly took the wrong road into 11 for 80m before realising and turning around, then took a wrong turn between 11 and 22. These probably cost me a minute, but not enough to improve my 9th place. Good course by Cameron, lots of different options.

Orienteering race 40:00 [4] 5.5 km (7:16 / km)
shoes: X-Talon 190

Melbourne street event at Moonee Ponds, no idea of time or distance as no result up yet. 5.5 is the 'set' distance for the C course. Went there and back by train from North Melbourne, on the way out the train I had planned to catch was announced as being 7 minutes late, but eventually came in 12 minutes late, then dawdled between two of the four stations en route so I arrived at the event with barely enough time to change my shoes and glasses. Had a pretty good route, but one control was misplaced by 250m where there was a map error (map showed a non-existent laneway), and the combination of the map error and the misplacement cost me a good 2-3 minutes.

As far as I could gather at the Finish (no results display) I was 2nd, and possibly could have won without the map problem. Didn't hang around at the event, but then had to wait 20 minutes at the station for the train back.

Results up, but no times; I got 3rd.

Orienteering race 17:24 [4] 2.5 km (6:58 / km)
shoes: X-Talon 190

Sprint race in Melbourne, 5th place behind 4 Victorian juniors. Heavy showers just before I started, and a couple of others during the race, also very cold. I picked the best route to 2 and was in the lead there, but lost it after 3 where I couldn't work out the route to 4 and stopped for a good 20 seconds. Finally realised I had to go out of the school, cross a road and head into a park opposite. From there it was into an entirely different school then back across the park into the original school. This was where I made another blue on 9-10 using the wrong entrance and running into a dead end. Lost a few more seconds choosing the longest route to 17. Tricky little course and fun event despite (or because of?) the rain.

Orienteering race 16:52 [4] 2.2 km (7:40 / km)
shoes: X-Talon 190

Sprint race at Eltham College, Melbourne. Quite a few hesitations and small errors and a couple of bad route choices, but finished 9th behind several kids (Keys and Arthur's) and Jenny Bourne. Good map by young Aston Key, although the scale was a little foreign to me (1:2500), but quite a hilly area and I was cooked by about 1.5kms in.

I also jogged around the 1.9km Easy course with my 6yo nephew Kobi doing the punching and taking the credit for 2nd place at his first orienteering event.

Road cycling 3:01:20 [3] 58.6 km (3:06 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Final day on the Rail Trail. We had looked at a road ride map that someone had left in our accommodation, but on driving around it we found that a) it had a very steep and long uphill more suited to a race stage, and then a long, even steeper downhill on a gravel road that was littered with windblown branches, also two sections totalling about 6kms on the highway. So we decided to go to Yarck for lunch, the Giddy Goat being open today. This involved two Rail Trail sections we had done on previous days, but 60% of the ride was new to us. Uphill to the Cheviot tunnel then a great downhill into Molesworth, before joining up with the Yarck section at Cathkin. Very nice countryside, rolling hills with green paddocks tinged with cape weed yellow, views of higher, forested ranges in the distance, some forested sections on the trail, and an interesting section along an embankment with wetlands either side. Trail surface mostly good. Excellent home-made Cornish pastime and salad at the GG, followed by passion fruit vanilla slice, coffee not so good as the others we've had though.

Thoroughly recommend the Trail - doable on any type of bike, except an expensive road bike. Our old roadies with 28mm tyres were great.

Note

Still got flu symptoms - chesty cough and blocked sinuses.

Road cycling 2:26:17 [3] 46.37 km (3:09 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Bonnie Doon to Mansfield on the Rail Trail and back. Best surface of the trail so far, very hard, compact black gravel - almost like bitumen. However, with constant drizzle on the return ride, surface dust turned to black slush - all over us and the bikes. Found a very good coffee roasters in Mansfield, and the ride was almost swoop-free with just the one half-hearted pass several feet above my head - he must have been trying out for Collingwood.

Road cycling 2:24:50 [3] 43.0 km (3:22 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Another day on the Great Victorian Rail Trail, from Cathkin to Alexandra on a spur line, then back to Cathkin and up to Yarck on the main trail. Very nice ride to Alexandra with a couple of hills and nice downhills. Good view of the Cathedral Ranges from the highest point. Had coffee and raisin toast in Alexandra, just as well we did because our planned lunch stop, the Giddy Goat in Yarck was closed. Cold with the odd bit of drizzle, but a good day except for a couple of persistent magpies, although only one of them got us in both directions of the ride.

Road cycling 3:18:28 [3] 55.3 km (3:35 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Great Victorian Rail Trail from Yea to Trawool. Trail very soft in places making for hard riding. Missed the rain which had already happened earlier, and then came again not long after we finished. Didn't go all the way to Tallarook, which would have been another 30km there and back. Great scenery, especially alongside the Goulbourn River, and near Trawool where there was a property which looked ripe for a granite orienteering map. Trawool turned out to be a blink or miss place, but we found the Schoolhouse Gallery which did a very nice Devonshire tea - scones were excellent and we bought a jar of the home-made Plumand Youngerberry jam. Bikes were covered in crap after the ride and had to be hosed down.

Road cycling 1:26:59 [3] 24.0 km (3:37 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Arrived in Yea, weather ok despite forecast rain, so we went for a warm-up ride to the Cheviot tunnel. When we got back to Yea I noticed PP's rear light missing so we went back 2km and found it still flashing. Track surface not too bad considering recent rain.

Orienteering race 35:35 [3] 5.0 km (7:07 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

First Metro race of the season at Karawara. Started towards 26, then changed my mind and arrived at 25 about 10th in line. Everyone else took off towards 23 so not wanting to be in a train around the course I took off in a different direction. Unfortunately I didn't see that 24 was a good option form my direction and went to 21. Approaching it I realised I would have to leave the 3 controls in the SE, and then between 21 and 18 also saw that I would have to leave 3 more controls in the NE, uh-oh that's 8 of my 9 leaves gone already! Some time later I noticed that 6 and 8 were long 'in-and-outs', and then forgot that I had one leave to spare and went to both, so ended up with one control too many. Tricky course, well done Wayne.

Note
(sick)

Heavy cold.
