Running 38:13 [3] 6.6 km (5:47 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Kings Park short lap, with Juffy until the Broadwalk. Struggled on the hills again, put it down to the humidity.

Looking good for getting back on the bike tomorrow!

Sunday Jan 29, 2017 #

Running 43:57 [3] 6.91 km (6:22 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Hyde Park laps, in place of what should have been a 80km ride, but the weather more suited to running. Kept the pace slow.

Orienteering race 32:40 [4] 5.25 km (6:13 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Metro race at Coogee, picked a route that avoided climbing from the start, but then fell in a hole when I did have to climb after about 2km, and had to walk most of the uphills in the second half of my route. Forgot to start Garmin again, but at least I realised before getting to the first control.

28 appears to be in an out of bounds bush area, with some approaches and exits also out of bounds, but that doesn't seem to have stopped some people. Probably a darker green should have been used for these areas.

It seems the Western routes were shorter, though hillier. My Eastern route: 22,21,20,17,13,14,15,27,26,16,4,5,28 (via the white!),18,29,9,25. Down in 7th because the 'guns' all turned up, though it seems they didn't have great routes.

Road cycling 2:27:51 [3] 56.71 km (2:36 / km)

Running 37:49 [4] 6.6 km (5:44 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Short lap at Kings Park with Juffy, shorter than last week but faster and harder.

Monday Jan 23, 2017 #

Road cycling 2:37:32 [3] 60.99 km (2:35 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Around the river with PP, but after muffin & coffee we decided to follow the river around Nedlands, South Perth & Burswood.

Orienteering race 31:38 [4] 5.2 km (6:05 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Metro race at Warwick. Had Garmin all set up to start before Ricky's briefing, but promptly forgot it. Noel and a few others got a break on me when I went to the right around the stadium to 1 and had to jump an unmapped fence. Had a look at the course on the way to 2 but only counted 18 in the bushland area so thought I had to get them all. Caught Noel between 2 and 3, and recounted so knew I could drop 2 controls. Ron M arrived at 29 and 3 just ahead of me, with Noel just behind. I thought I could out-navigate Ron and out-run Noel, but wasn't sure who else might have picked a good route. Crossed back across the road to get 8 before cleaning up the rest of the Western section, then saw that the obvious 'leave' was 26, with a choice of 4 and 5 for the other. Decided to get 4 and leave 5, Noel and Ron still around at 4 and then 21 but I sneaked in to punch ahead then hot-footed it to 9 where it seemed they had disappeared. Saw Noel again coming out of 30 but knew I had gained enough, and when I saw Ron ducking in to 28 ahead of me I thought he'd got it. However there was no-one at the Finish and Ricky confirmed I'd won. I'm guessing Ron had dropped earlier controls that I didn't know about. Anthea came in a couple of minutes behind me, and Noel another couple after that.

Route was 1-2-29-3-25-8-23-22-24-10-27-4-21-9-6-30-28-7. Distance a bit of an educated guess.

Road cycling 1:58:36 [3] 42.5 km (2:47 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

West Coast ride with PP, stopped for coffee at the Goods Shed and forgot to restart my Garmin until almost home.

Friday Jan 20, 2017 #

Road cycling 3:02:54 [3] 71.85 km (2:33 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Friday group ride, but over breakfast at The Other Side I decided to ride back the long way, ie the way we had come.

MTB cycling 1:28:18 [3] 18.02 km (4:54 / km)
shoes: Hired/borrowed clunker

Mapping - update of Yokine Reserve, on PP's mtb because at least it has got a rear wheel, even if it can only get the 3 smallest cogs on the rear cassette. Lots of changing of front chain rings when any hills are encountered.

NB Most of the laneways are not sealed, and have lots of double-gees, so I walked these and then picked the prickly bastards off the tyres in order to avoid punctures.

Road cycling 2:23:49 [3] 56.87 km (2:32 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Around the river including Mt Henry, the beemer running very smoothly after yesterday's service and new chain, but unfortunately the wind refused to co-operate. You can almost guarantee that a SE headwind down the freeway to Mt Henry will have swung around to a NE headwind from Freo for the ride up the coast and along the rail path to home.

Running 46:09 [3] 7.92 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Note: Bike service today at 19000kms.

Monday Jan 16, 2017 #

Road cycling 45:00 [3] 16.98 km (2:39 / km)

Road cycling 1:47:36 [3] 45.0 km (2:23 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

From Dad's to continue around the river, breakfast at the Goods Shed next to Claremont station.

Road cycling 1:58:43 [3] 42.51 km (2:48 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

West Coast ride with PP. Got slowed up along Mounts Bay Rd by a triathlon.

Road cycling 1:42:33 [3] 45.24 km (2:16 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

ERC Group ride, small bunch of 8 with one pulling out to take a shortcut before Perry Lakes. I was 2nd last after the Reabold hill and descent, and we'd just caught up approaching the Rochdale Rd turn when the leaders pulled away again and headed off along West Coast Hwy. Chased them down Servetus and onto Curtin Ave, but I got caught alone at the Eric St lights. It dawned on me that this might be the faster group doing the longer route, so I crossed the rail line at Jarrad St and headed back to Christ Church thinking they would eventually catch me around Nedlands. Never saw them again, and no-one at Tiger Tiger so came home.

Orienteering race 44:13 [4] 7.24 km (6:06 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Metro Series score race at Hillarys. Decided to head North and leave the two hilltops near the finish until last. Was a bit surprised at the lack of 30-pointers in the North of the urban area, so decided to concentrate on those in the South. Had 17 minutes to spare by the time I got to no. 30 so added 7 and 20 to my route. With 10 minutes left at 17 after crossing back over Whitfords Ave I thought I might have time to get no. 2 after the two hilltops, but they were tougher than expected with a lot of walking, so had to forget the no. 2 option. Route was 1,24,13,3,12,4,25,18,6,26,27,21,30,7,20,8,17,23,22 for 400 points and second place - surprising for me as score events not my forte. Maybe the suburbrun practice helped.

shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Tuesday Jan 10, 2017 #

Running 39:31 [3] 6.61 km (5:59 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Kings Park run with K & C and Juffy. Warm evening but not as hot as last week. First time two runs in two days for a while - have to repeat this a few times before NZ.

Booked the Beemer in for a service and bought a new helmet today.

Monday Jan 9, 2017 #

Road cycling 1:20:11 [3] 32.54 km (2:28 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Bassendean ride.

Running 6:00 [3] 1.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Warm-up. SR said this course was 0km from my location, but actually 1.04kms.

Orienteering 36:20 [3] 5.67 km (6:24 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Suburb Run - North Perth Score. Left out the controls that I'm pretty sure were wrong, but could probably have got them all in the 45 mins.

Upload to Suburbrun has not worked, so I don't know if I 'visited' all the controls. Found that it was impossible to tell from the map where controls were, so hope that I got close enough. It looked like most of them were in the middle of the road - not very user-friendly if cars are around.

Had to cross Fitzgerald St in peak traffic hour 6 times, cost me 2-3 minutes.

Based on this experience I probably won't bother with SR again.

Running 6:30 [3] 1.0 km (6:30 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Warm-down.

Sunday Jan 8, 2017 #

Road cycling 3:30:52 [3] 82.36 km (2:34 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Freeway-Mandogalup-Woodman Pt-Fremantle with PP. Light winds for a change, had nice banana bread and coffee at Hush in Freo High St.

Walking 34:34 [2] 3.32 km (10:25 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Walk around the controls on the North Perth suburbrun that I knew would be wrong, and also some laneways that the map did not show.

Saturday Jan 7, 2017 #

Road cycling 1:47:27 [3] 44.17 km (2:26 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

West coast ride, thankfully the wind was lighter than last week.

Friday Jan 6, 2017 #

Road cycling 2:14:39 [3] 48.95 km (2:45 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Friday group ride, very strong SW headwind to Freo, then a nice tailwind up the coast.

Thursday Jan 5, 2017 #

Road cycling 3:02:25 [3] 68.32 km (2:40 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Kings Park short lap in very hot conditions (36C).

Monday Jan 2, 2017 #

Road cycling 1:53:10 [3] 44.16 km (2:34 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

West Coast ride, struggletown once I reached the coast with strong headwinds, worst of all along Mounts Bay Rd.

Sunday Jan 1, 2017 #

Road cycling 2:52:16 [3] 67.2 km (2:34 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Two rivers ride, joined by PP at Canning Bridge the second time. Muffin in a bag and coffee in a paper cup at The Other Side - their usual modus operandi on a holiday when most other places are closed.
