Road cycling 2:51:49 [3] 69.19 km (2:29 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Two rivers ride, strong Easterlies making it all very hard except for the section from Riverton Bridge to Fremantle.

Monday Jan 29, 2018 #

Road cycling 2:26:41 [3] 57.06 km (2:34 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Around the river via Mt Henry and a short detour to re-check one of the Mt Pleasant control sites. Strong SEly, so happy to get a wheel on the Freeway path, but not so lucky along the rail path from Swanbourne to Subi.

Road cycling 1:42:08 [3] 38.45 km (2:39 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

West Coast ride, didn't have time to do the usual Reabold loop, but the distance was still just enough to make 25,000kms on the Beemer. Time to think about a new one?

Orienteering race 35:45 [4] 5.5 km (6:30 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Metro race at Wanneroo. Was waiting for Cameron to start the bikes first, but he didn't, so forgot to start my gps. Seemed like everyone else went West or North, so I mad my way through the playground area to no. 3 virtually alone. From there though I didn't have that good a route, mainly because I went on to 6 instead of picking up 4, 7 and 12 before 6. Also, I didn't see the path between 11 and 21, and therefore dismissed 21 and 22 as being best left out. Would have jumped several places, maybe even to top 5 as most of the field was only a couple of minutes ahead of me.

Running 23:12 [3] 3.14 km (7:23 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Walk-run-walk to Hyde Park to test the calf muscle. Seemed ok, no problem during the 2km running figure 8 lap (which was just under 6min pace), possibly a bit tight on the 500m walk home.

Road cycling 1:51:44 [3] 43.51 km (2:34 / km)

Road cycling 1:15:55 [3] 28.75 km (2:38 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Ride to City Beach for Metro Series event, via Nedlands and Cottesloe.

Orienteering 39:40 [3] 7.0 km (5:40 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Metro event on the bike - start was a bit hurried as I got there later than planned. Went to 12 along with most of the bikes it seems, but then they all went North, while I went South to 13 - my first mistake. The second mistake was immediately afterwards, not continuing South, but heading up the Eastern side of the Northern controls. This error was amplified by 28 - firstly coming from the North it was not only not on the feature, but well hidden. Those coming from South would have ridden/run past it. The other thing about 28 was that I then had a long leg to 27. 15 to 19 was not much fun on a road bike, I would have been faster going around by road. Hampered by sweat and sun in my eyes for the last 4-5 controls - had meant to put a cap on, but this got forgotten in the rush at the start.

Road cycling 1:58:11 [3] 43.2 km (2:44 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

For once the Bureau got the forecast right. On looking out, and viewing the radar I couldn't see any drizzle, and couldn't believe that if there were to be any, it would amount to 4-5mm. Sure enough though, just after starting out the drizzle arrived, and just didn't stop. At times it got heavier almost to the point of being rain.

Had planned to go to Shelley Bridge, then meet PP on my return to Canning Bridge and continue around the river. On getting to Canning Bridge, we decided just to go straight home. Bikes, helmets, shoes, all our clothing and our legs and arms covered in fine road dirt. Had shower then watched the TDU.

Road cycling 2:03:44 [3] 46.75 km (2:39 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

West Coast ride, sans Reabold loop, but added South Perth and Burswood. PP with me until Claremont - sneakily said she was going home via the rail path, but then stopped at the Goods Shed for coffee as soon as I was out of sight.

Road cycling 34:29 [3] 12.89 km (2:41 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

To Gwelup Metro event, getting cooler with each km Westwards; pity about having to go East at Hutton St through the stupid City of Stirling detour.

Road cycling 1:02:21 [3] 12.71 km (4:54 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Gwelup Metro score event. Although no contours on the map I knew the Western street section was hilly, but I was warmed up anyway, so decided to do that first and have a look at the map to see which controls around the lake might be tricky on road wheels.

Should really have left 119 to do on the way back, but went there first since I wasn't sure if I would be coming back that way. No contours, so went the long way round from 114 to 103 - mistake!

104 and 112 looked not designed for roadies, so decided to drop them. Went through the limestone track and wooden bridge between 111 and 109, then stopped at the mapped 124 and scratched my head because it wasn't there. Eventually went on and found it on the less sharp bend to the NE. Dropped 108 because for a 10-pointer it was a bloody long out and back.

Walked in to 125 and then around to 110 because a) the grass was soft and b) didn't want to risk a puncture if there were any double-Gs around. Contimued walking out to the road then rode around to 105, which was on (unmapped) paving.

The old bike path into 126 is now pretty rough, and should probably be mapped as dashed. Didn't trust the path between 127 and 120 so went around by road, but it looked like the path was probably ok. Unmapped path at the end of the road 120 was on, so took that to get to 128. The shelter at 130 seems much closer to the road than the map shows.

Should have continued around the boardwalk from 121, but misread the map. Came in 2+ minutes over, so lost 30 points, but still got much higher score than I expected to. Pity there was only one other bike.

Road cycling 35:00 [3] 12.5 km (2:48 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Came home via Karrinyup Rd, started the Garmin but it somehow got stopped.

Orienteering race 46:17 [3] 5.93 km (7:48 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Ranford Metro. Picked a lousy route, but enjoyed the bit I shouldn't have done in the bush West of the Start. Meant to go to 14 after leaving that area, but missed the turn and got a bit confused before going on to 23. Then realised there wasn't a way through to 16, so had to go on to 21. Just after 26 I felt my L. calf really tighten up, so walked the rest of the way.

Bassendean ride, then coffee at Satchmo. Was able to cross Guildford Rd without unclipping for the first time in ages, and also scored trains at each of the 3 level crossings, so no cars to worry about.

Around the river with PP.
