Orienteering race 50:40 [4] **** 6.1 km (8:18 / km)
spiked:9/14c shoes: Inov8 X Talon 212

Day 1 of Autumn Classic at Umuna. Only one bigger error at 4, but a few annoying small glitches close to controls. Had seen 4 on the way to 1, and was right on track for the first half of the leg, but then stayed too high. 6.8km on the 305.

Walked up any slight hill - must run them tomorrow with OY points at stake and Joe to beat.

Orienteering race 1:03:12 [4] **** 6.6 km (9:35 / km) +235m 8:08 / km
spiked:11/15c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330

First bush race for 2010, not too bad error wise, except for the first and last controls, went wide on a couple of others but recovered quickly. At 1 there were lots of blackboys and zamias around, thought I'd done the right distance from a prominent cluster AP, but turned round and saw I'd passed it by 50m. At the last, on the approach I was looking for a small spur with 3 boulders in a line, saw a control and knew it wasn't mine but took it to be on a cluster on the next spur over. Corrected my bearing accordingly and missed the last because the control had actually been on the 3 boulders in a line! When I finally got to the area of the last control, I couldn't read the neighbouring rocks correctly, and took about a minute of searching to find it.

GPS distance 7.68km - I was pretty close to straight except for the two errors and two legs where I was maybe 50-100m off but on a curve, so I wonder if the official distance was correct? Presumably it was measured by Corpse or Condes?

Hot day - needed more than one water drop. Fortunately I passed a water drop on another course, there wasn't much left and I thought about not drinking but I was really dry by that time. Hope someone else didn't suffer, but really Organisers should put extra water out when 29C is forecast.
