670+ mile driving day to Kickapoo SP, Danville, IL. Reasonable camping rates ($10 for tent with no hookups).

Sunday Aug 30, 2009 #

orienteering race 1:11:37 [4] **** 6.4 km (11:11 / km) +90m 10:27 / km
13c shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

COC long, Hogs Back, Spruce Woods Provincial Park, Manitoba.
finished 7th out of 13. 7 minute mistake on #2.

Afterwards, drove about 400 miles to Lake Carlos SP, Minnesota. Terrain looks like it would make an interesting O' map. But $20 for tent camping with no hook-ups, plus a $5 park entry fee on top of that was pretty obnoxious. Darts to Minnesota State Parks for an outrageous fee structure.

COC Sprint (WRE) - Hogs Back, Spruce Woods Provincial Park, Manitoba. A bit sloppy starting out, blew 2 minutes on #1 and #3. Felt a bit stiff and slow. Ran M-21E+. No WRE points.

walking 25:00 [1] ** 1.5 km (16:40 / km)
1c shoes: A W Journey 2

David Ross & I took a very early morning walk on the Yellow Quill map to attempt to locate & recover the compass that I dropped when attacked by hornets on Tuesday. We found the compass, and did not meet any hornets.

orienteering race 32:40 [4] **** 4.0 km (8:10 / km) +80m 7:25 / km
12c shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

Canadian Relay - Yellow Quill, Spruce Woods Prov Park, Manitoba.
I was 2nd for my leg (1st leg of 3), and my team (Charlie Shahbazian - CAOC and Kevin Teschendorf - BGR) ended up 3rd in the 3-5 point class.

still feeling some after-effects from the hornet stings.

orienteering race 25:00 [3] **** 2.0 km (12:30 / km)
7c (injured) shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

Saas-Peepre Coaches / Juniors Relay, paired with Molly Kemp. Molly did great. I felt like I was in a daze the whole time and and never really got into the map and terrain. Probably the after-effects of the hornet stings and medication. Still had a baseball-size swelling on left forearm and inner right thigh.

Wisely decided not to attempt the Prairie Goat in the heat that afternoon. Got some good photos of the mass start, then ended up assisting an orienteer who got multiple stings on the first leg, then took some photos of the bedraggled, heat-exhausted finishers as they staggered in.

time and distance estimated.

orienteering 1:00:00 [3] *** 4.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

Saas-Peepre Camp training on Yellow Quill map. Line-O to start, some warm-up out & back legs, and a warm-up course before lunch.

Right after lunch, while setting controls for a relocation course, I tripped over a low wire fence. While tying some warning streamers on it, I got nailed by two hornets. One on the left elbow and one high on the right inner thigh. Although very painful, I am probably lucky that the second one was not a couple inches higher! Lost my compass in my haste to flee (David Ross and I returned to the scene early on Friday morning and found it, although some little varmint had chewed up the thumb strap.)
