Orienteering race 1:10:06 [3] 6.7 km (10:28 / km) +360m 8:15 / km

QOC local event at Patapsco Glen Artney.

I did the Red course and ran quite tentatively, especially on the downhills. My back is in a state of "tolerable, but unpleasant". I am not sure whether to push for further treatment or hope that it will get better by itself. My doctor seems to think this is not a case of a burst or bulging disk, but rather just some inflammation that will resolve by itself. But it's been a month now. Ugh.

The orienteering itself went ok. This is not QOC's nicest area, but Ted Good did a good job of accurately mapping the green, so you could at least try to minimize the damage. Still, I came back nearly as bloody as from the cactus wars of last week. I won the red course, but was consistently slower than Joe and Sam, and a little slower than Wyatt, on the common legs between Red and Blue.

Running 15:00 [2]

Running to the start of the Cat Rock Score-O.

Orienteering 55:00 [3]

Score-O at Cat Rock. We had to get to the airport right after orienteering, so I had a pretty tight deadline to get all the controls. I managed, but it was nice to have the extra pressure to keep me moving. This is a visually spectacular area, nestled on the other side of a saddle between two massive rocks. Lots of cactus, as usual, and the orienteering consisted as much of navigating, as of trying to avoid being speared by a cactus. I had four stops to remove jumping cholla spikes from my feet, but all of these were successful.

The orienteering went fairly well, especially in the beginning, but then I lost a couple of minutes in the circle over the last few controls. Tricky and challenging terrain, but I wouldn't want this to be my regular home terrain. Too spiky.

Orienteering 14:33 [2]

Sprint training at University of Arizona. The first part was a corridor. I did this with Alli while grandparents took Inara.

Orienteering 30:28 [2]

Sprint course. Alli and I ran together, splitting up to test route choices. It was very fun. A nice course designed by Cristina.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]

A walking Score-O in Bisbee, AZ with Will and Alli. Really fun time.

Orienteering 38:00 [3]

Cholla Chaser at Catalina State Park. I got a handicap of having to find six bonus controls, compared to Will's seven. This was enough to let me get the win. I had a lot of fun orienteering and felt surprisingly strong physically, especially for the first half of the course.

Orienteering 51:09 [2] 5.3 km (9:39 / km)

Green course at Catalina State Park. I took it easy, but still managed to screw up, especially in the beginning, before I realized that the north lines were not parallel to the sides of the page. It went better afterwards, much better than I recall orienteering in this terrain the last time i was here, ten years ago.

Orienteering 1:17:10 [2]

Javelina Hustle with Alli. We did the short course together. It was really fun, and Alli navigated really well. Nice to get eased into the Tucson terrain with some of the less spiky stuff today.
