Kayaking 4:04:00 [3] 33.01 km (7:24 / km) +1837m 5:47 / km

Long paddle with Kev Peircy and Tom Crebbin- two legends of the Australian Multisport community. They are both training for a final crack at Coast to Coast next year.
The trip nearly ended before it started with Kev backing over my paddle (lucky i packed the old one). Fortunately only the end of the shaft was split and it held together pretty well with a bit of tape.
The water level was a very disappointing 0.27m. Apparently all the rain in melbourne missed the Thompson Catchment. We had lots of stopping for Kev to empty water out of his boat because of a dodgy spray deck. Good fun.

Running 39:29 [3] 7.04 km (5:37 / km) +237m 4:48 / km

Short evening jog after spending the afternoon sorting out my garage to fit in the numerous boats, bikes and much other crap.
Legs felt pretty fresh.

Morning run down to the river and back with a few stops to stretch. Also watched the little A's for a while then checked out the trophy and records wall in the clubroom. Lucky for Kathryn she still has one record left- the U18 Steeplechase record. But Jane Ewels holds the U20 record in a faster time....Apparently that was just before Jane found booze and boys.

Arvo blob before heading into Melbourne because for some stupid reason I decided to go to the VOA Council Meeting. Why an organisation with 200K in the bank only orders 2 pizzas for a meeting with 20 people I'll never know. Very hungry for the next day.

After the 2nd day of the Gippsland Primary Schools sports camp I headed to Erica in search of mtb trails. It took me a while to find the best ones, but they are certainly doing some good work there.
The poor old cannondale didn't like it first ride in several months. Even the jockey wheels had seized.

Spent all day teaching Orienteering to primary school kids on the Gippsland Sports Camp at Rawson. I had to make a map of Rawson Village first, did about 1hr of fieldwork and 10hrs cartography. I hope I can improve this ratio in the future. Actually mapped most of it with a decent aerial photograph and pictures taken for later reference.
Anyway it was a fun day. Kids are keen and more interesting than sitting on the computer.

Went for a run in the evening from Rawson down to the Steel Bridge across Thompson River at Poverty Point and back. Great trail, half of which was burned out on Black Saturday and I had never run on all of it.
Calves are still shattered, just don't understand why.

Australian Long Distance MTBO champs
After suggesting several times that we didn't really need to do this race we still ended up at the startline. Though I was pretty darn close to missing my start after several unplanned mechanical issues to sort out pre-race. One included forgetting my mtb shoes. Fortunately I had my road shoes and pedals from yesterdays race and swapped them over.

I never really go into this race. Stopped several times to make bike adjustments and just generally tired and unmotivated. I was surprised by how bad it was trying to clip in my pedals and spent about half the race with only one pedal fully clipped in. Made a few smallish errors but nothing to big. Ended up 20mins behind AJ. Dropped 15mins in the first hour so the 2nd half was a bit of an improvement.
6th place- same as foot-O long champs.

King Valley Challenge- Leg 1- 15km run

I would have missed this race but it was postponded during the recent flooding. Its a new Multisport race on the calendar organised by Liam Delaney (a good friend of Kirsten Fairfax's). After such a fantastic warm Thursday and Friday, it was wet and cool come race day. The first leg was 15km run on an undulating 4wd track starting at Lake William Hovell in the King Valley. At the start there was a lead pack of about 10 runners (including two teams), but it soon split up an I found myself with Kathryn and Aaron Dodd, and not able to hang onto Luke Haine. It was an interesting run with a few creek crossings and slippery climbs and decents. I finally managed to gap Kathryn by 1.5mins, and ended up about 2.5mins behind the first guy.

We had a joint house leaving (Kathryn's), house-warming (mine) and a late birthday party for Kathryn last night. It was great to have some visitors from Melbourne. Hopefully everyone will realise Trafalgar isn't really that far away and come visit more often.
It has rained for 3 days and continued this morning. Good company with Kathryn, Blair, Jasmine, Kirsten, Keith and Vanessa. Keith and I ran for two hours, good effort from the hockey player, bike commuter and occasional runner.
Spent the afternoon moving the 100m from Kathryn's to my place.

It was just a great day I decided to ditch the planned ride and meet Kathryn and Jen for a paddle at the pondage. Steady pace for the first 30mins then 2nd half was a mix of very cruisy talking pace with some surges thrown in.

Also saw Michael to Osteopath. Genius. Hopefully he sorted out a few lingering problems.

Victorian Long Distance Championships
Very long, long champs on a new map new Newstead. I started 2mins behind Bryan and 2 in front of Evan and didn't like my chances on the super fast flat spur gully terrain. I didn't see either of them, only ran with Blair for a period in the middle of the course.
I didn't lose much time, but never felt that fast. In this terrain you always have to keep pushing hard. I was wearing Kathryn's GPS watch and it annoyingly beeps every km, but on this type of course its actually good to give you something to think about. I spotted Blair (4mins) just out of XX and picked up the pace a bit to make sure I covered 10km in under 50mins (49.38). But then got tired and unmotivated when I didn't drop him.
Finally had a gel at 16, it was a long gap from 5-16 with no drink. Lost 20 secs on 18 by running to high up the gully to the right. Blair got it first and I had to run him down again. Compass still kept pulling me to the right often but I started running a bit harder to 20-21-22 and lost Blair. I didn't have a drink or gel at 22 because I was so close to the finish but died at 24. I overran this one slightly as it was hidden in an erosion gully. I was equal with Bruce at this point but he ended up putting 40secs into me by the end as I struggled home.

There were two untimed road crossings, that were actually much longer than just crossing the road. Who do you think spent the longest time crossing the road?
myself, Bruce, Bryan, Evan, Toph, Dave Brownridge, Jimbo or Goddard?

Victorian Middle Distance Championships set by Blair.
Didn' t really prepare much for this race, physically or mentally but it didn't seem to matter. Ran a good run until 19 which I couldn't find as it was hidden under some gorse when viewed from above. I looked right, then went past and looked left, before coming back to the right spot and wondering why I didn't see it the first time. This error cost me the lead and Evan beat me by 10secs. Good run Ev.

Australian Relay Championships
Running 2nd leg for the 2010 SILVA NOL winning team, with Ezy on first leg and Jules on 3rd.
Grant had a good first leg for the Cockies and Ezy came back 3.5mins down in 4th place.
I started about 20secs behind Bruce and caught him by the first control. I thought we would push each other around but he dropped off on the way to #3. I ran the first half pretty well but got a bit lazy and sloppy for the 2nd half. Direction was pretty bad on #9 and I kept zig-zagging and bouncing off the tops of the creeks I wanted to run around. I lost about 1-1.30mins on 12. Talking to several others afterwards it seemed a bit strange in there. I struggled to really push hard for the 2nd half of the course and my chest was still feeling a bit weak. Handed over to Jules about 7mins down which was a bit disappointing. He then proceded to destroy Rob Walters lead and got back only 1min down. Great run Jules, we should have offered more support.
Good to see Kathryn show her relay running dominance again.

Australian Long Distance Orienteering Championships
I had a pretty bad sleep and my chest felt really shitty after the sprint yesterday. Very annoyed that I pushed hard for no result.
Got a big shock like everyone else running to #1, but decided to keep the feet dry (and gave up 30secs to Jules). I felt ok running to 2 and 3 but was a bit overconfident on 4 and got sucked to a parallel rock spur to the left and lost 30secs.
I ran 5 and 6 quite well and was catching Dave Brownridge and Simon Goddard. Felt pretty crap on the mountain climb to 7 and missed the control as I misread the building near the control. Leg 8 was a good route choice and I decided to head to the right and run along the fence line. This leg was mostly good but had few slower patches. I think going even further right (Rob W and Simon did this) would have been even better.
9 and 10 were ok but as I caught Jimbo at 11 I mistakenly thought he would lead me into the control and lost over a minute trying to understand some strange rock clusters. I was absolutely buggered on 12 and 13 but tried to pick it up down to 14. Couldn't understand anything climbing to 15 but somehow found it. 16-18 was ok, and a 2nd Shotz gel there. Passed Nicko and Conrad having a gay old time running to 19.
Took a good look at the long leg to 21. I looked a going right which was actually much better but somehow convinced myself to go left and try to attack a seriously dodgey control site on a steep rocky downhill. Wasted about a minute looking for control but could have been much more. I tried to push the last few climbs, and hit the controls ok. Finally got sight of Fatrat along the way to 25. Tried to pick it up and catch him but the body just didn't respond. Missed 30secs in the circle and never caught Ben but got close.

6th place was an ok result, but I'd hoped for better. 10hrs of cycling during the week probably took the edge off, but I can only blame myself. The middle section of the course didn't really suit me that much, a bit too much fast running thru farmland. The last part was good and while I picked up a few places I wasn't as strong as I'd expected. Good to pick up the trophy again with help from Jules and Ezy.

27 controls in 3.4km is the type of sprint race I like. Unfortunately I only went to 26 so didn't get on the scoreboard. Missed bloody 3 which was a straight line to 4. It wasn't a bad run either, should have finished between Ezy and Murray.
